Hi...
We grow these mailnly in strawberry pots each year. Its seems like this year when we checked on them outside alot of them rotted. Is this a common problem?
I wonder if we should bring them in the garage? The ones we have are heavy so we really don't want to drag them back and forth.
The ones we plant in the ground do wonderful.
It looks like we will be replanting alot fo our pots this year..
Greg
Greg,
They may freeze from being too high off the ground..
I had some in a big keg planter and mine died too,
the one's in the ground are fine...
So it could very well be they just don't get
the insulation they need being too high up....
I can't find any chicken and hens
Mine do good in the strawberry pot. But I plant them in 75% gravel. Also, if you have glazed Strawberry pots those hold water longer than the terracotta.
I have severe snow and ice winters. What will kill them is moisture. Try mixing more gravel with your potting mix and put a layer of gravel on top then plant your chicks.
Your other choice is put them under a porch or somewhere they have some protection from rain and snow in the winter. They need the cold but not the moisture in the winter.
This one has gone through 3 winters,
I brought all mine online and through trades. I found one pot in a corner at my local nursery last year. I do not know about other cities but they are not readily available in PA.
I kept mine in a plastic milk jug cut in half and the kept fine through the winter.
and angel if I remember to later on this year and if my hens and chicks make babies I'd be more than happy to send you some
I keep mine in an old pair of shoes..
hehehehehe..
If I find my picture I'll post it...
I have two sets of them, and try to do a
new set every year....
We'll see if I get to doing the 3rd pair early
this year...
okay, found it..
Thanks for the help!
Weezie...i too put them in shoes! I have a bunch of leather boys shoes in put them in on the porch,,
My mom gave me the idea..too cute!
Greg
****Got any pictures Greg???

I'm still on the look out for them I'll let you know if I find any!
I was surprised to see my hens and chicks my neighbor gave me are still alive...I forgot about them at the end of the year and they stayed in the flowerbed all winter, but look fine.....is that normal in zone 6???
Cute pic Weezie.
They are veryyyyyyyy winter hardy,
as long as they have contact with soil
and close to the ground...
*I personally have found that if I leave them
out in a very tall planter, they die..*
Anything else, they popppppp out come spring time
and area fine...
If for some reason, they have grown themselves out of the ground, pull them up, stem and all...
pull a few of the lower leaves off that would come in contact with the soil.. and there will be fine white hairs coming out from there..
Just place on top of the soil, press a bit to get the plant to make contact with the soil, and it'll re~root up.......
Loz, my mom has them all over and they never leave the flowerbed. They just....overpopulate LOL
Here are my two Hen and Chicks along with a Kaloncho I just got. This is the top tier.
Here it is hanging.
Another shot. The other two tiers has assorted succulents in them. Best part can be broken down and used separately or put on pole or on a chain like I have them .
Jimmy
That is one cool pot, Jimmy. I like the plants, too.
Thanks Tina. It waters from the top down or individualy. I am testing this pot and love it. It would be ideal for Strawberries or such.
Jimmy
My mom bought two sets of those types of planters,
and gave me one set for a Birthday gift....
She got them at QVC...
They are sooooooo cool lookin' I tell you..
The one year I did statice in them...
and I did them in the individual pots, apart..
WHAT STORE IN TEXAS SELLS THAT SEXY POT?
VERY NICE.......BUT IS IT HEAVY TO HANG OR DOES IT SET?
I HAVE THE STRAWBERRY JAR FOR MINE..AND I SHOVE IT UNDER THE STONE PORCH IN THE WINTER.. NO PROBLEM......THE REST OF MY RED CHICKENS ARE OUTSIDE ALL WINTER BY MY CHIMNEY.. IF I GET A NICE DAY, I MAY TAKE A PHOTO..........
THEY DO LIKE IT THERE, BECAUSE OF THE STONY AREA.
DODGE
Jimmy - I really like that pot!
Lucky you for getting to test it!
Dodge - might I tell you that it is considered YELLING online when you write in all capital letters?
Dodge I am testing this type right now.The one weezie had I think was the wick type this is wickless. As far as I know it can only be gotten online at the website may be from QVC I don't know. stackapot.com I think is the website I am at work but when I get home can PM you their website if you like. They also have one they are fixing to release clamps on a railing or a 2x4 which I would like to have. I get to keep what I test just fill out and return the form they send.
Jimmy
Great looking pot. I really like it. I hope it works well for you.
Just wanted to share a pic of mine!
Jimmy, Great pix!
I love that pot. Where in the world did you get it. On line, I hope.
Thanks for sharing. Sue
That is a neat pot. Is it heavy or light weight?
Pretty, pretty...

pot is very light until you get it filled with plants and soil. Not really that heavy then. Can be on a chain as I have it or on a rod or seperatley. this winter will probably break it down as no place in house to hang pots like that.
Love all the ideas for hens and chicks...now to go see my mom and snitch some of hers!
How do you plaNT THESE? I GOTTEN SOME LONG AGO, FROM AN GAL..BUT ROTTEN.I got some new babies..that someone just sended..but need to know..how really to plant them..maybe in n pot., but how much soil, rocks, or what to use
sheila
Chickens and hens? They are adorable!!!!! I wonder where I can get them around here (Florida). The shoe idea is too cute. They are succulents??
they are succulents and finding them that will grow and be happy in our wet weather here in the south is hard, but i've finally accomplished it, i think...
I am unable to keep them alive if I plant them in the ground, but if I plant them in a container or pot...they survive just fine. I think that we get way too much moisture here in my spot in Arkansas, and in a pot they can drain off that rain better. It seems that all of our mothers grow them. I got mine from my mom, she has one of those half whiskey barrels full, hers is over crowded and she wants to move some of them out of the barrel, but hasn't figured out where, she gave me all I could find in her flower beds to get rid of them out her beds. Here is what hers looks like:
That is gorgeous! They look so good in that purple planter!!

Its really not purple..its just weathered wood. I wish they would grow and multiply like that for me.
That is just gorgeous!!!
*you know it's funny about different parts of the world/country and growing conditions..
I tried putting some in a whiskey barrel my mom
has, and they died two years in a row..
I figured it was too high up off the ground for the freezing temps in the winter here*
Try an old wheelbarrow tipped sideways like PattyS did, that might work for you and drainage.
That's an interesting pot, JV. I've never seen anything like it.
Looks great!
Here's some in 2 pairs of shoes...
That shoe idea is really cool!
Hey! everyone does anyone have any hens n chicks they called cobweb?I sure would love some of them if anyone has any?Rita
Great idea Weezie
They look like artichokes...sort of!! They're very cute. I don't see them around here...
I think maybe cause your area/growing zone
maybe tooooo hot for them..
They need a cold winter and that type...
I do think they are up to growing zones
8 or 9...
Oh! thanks, Weezie..I was wondering about that!
weezie13,
I see you are in NY as well. Do you bring your in for the Winter?

Yes, I am in Western New York...
*about an hour South of Buffalo*
(which side are you on??)
and I do
NOT bring them in for winter..
They love winter... they'll stay green under
the snow all winter long...
I second what Weezie said - they don't mind the freezing temps here either, and come back better each year.
I have a small group of the cobwebs, Rita - but they are the only ones that are not growing for me - it's still the same very small size it was when I got it last summer - sorry.
Thank you
I'm in Oneida County about an hour east of Syracuse.
