According to eNature.com's online insect guide, that is a female Common Whitetail Dragonfly. Go to eNature.com to check it out. They have the BEST online guides to identify ANY plant, animal, bird, fish, amphibian, reptile, or insect, native to North America. By using the Advance Search mode, you can GREATLY reduce the number of choices of what you are looking for by using their fill in the blank methods.

I keep My digital in my pocket 24/7. The best way to get a Dragonfly to sit still for you is to go fishing. They Will ALWAYS fly by and land with their wings spread, right on the tip of your fishing pole! laugh

Many species of insects can be found throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Here's one I've tried catching a shot of.He does follow when I water the plants.I like its white stripe across wings.its also larger than the others in my yard.my red ones returned this year& I some green ones that hang in one area. When I'm fishing, they useually land on my bobber or my beer.

Cute, I don't see them around here all that often....once in a while they'll zip by my head...but it's not an everyday occurence.

Inspired by you all, I went out and tried to take a few shots of the dragonflies that haunt my garden. I was really hoping to see this gorgeous blue dragonfly but found the brown one instead. Here is my album , I just hate to shrink the pics, and I really should start cropping them down to the main focus. I just love the detail you get with a monstrously huge picture.

That's hot (sorry, I'm a Paris Hilton fan) . Sarah, you can identify any living creature, plant OR animal, using eNature.com. They have online field guides for all flora and fauna of North America. Using their Advanced Search, you can fill in the blanks to reduce your choices of lifeform you are trying to identify down to just a handful. Here is the site:

Thanks for the link Thornius! I'm going to have to bookmark it for future reference. The dragonfly I had hoped to see was a Twelve Spotted Skimmer. Such a pretty "bug". And, I'm guessing, that the one I got pics of is a Common Whitetail.
Posted By: jakesangel Re: unusual winged dragonfly? picture - August 19th, 2006 at 07:24 AM
Sarah your photos are GORGEOUS girl. I'm like you..I hate shrinking photos..especially those in macro mode. Leave'em huge! lol

Dragonflies are too fun to shoot. I guess it's the whole thrill of "how long can ya be still for me". lol

Here's the last one I shot. I haven't looked him up yet but he sure is green. Dragonfly

Jakesangel, Your dragonfly is an Eastern Pondhawk. Here is a link to your precious:

I really like your album you got there! It's always fun to coordinate the color of the page with your dragonfly. Makes it much more dramatic and attractive. And, what a great pic!! That guy must've been posing for you, just begging to get his picture taken!!

I saw Swarms of Common Whitetails today in a small creek about 100 yards east of my house plus two beautiful American Goldfinches.
Posted By: LandOfOz Re: unusual winged dragonfly? picture - August 19th, 2006 at 10:09 AM
Wow, I bet you were wishing you'd brought your camera!!

Kim, I just looked at the rest of your pics in that album, and I've got to say, those look awesome. I really like the pictures of the praying mantis. You could've warned me about the spider pics though. lol
Posted By: jakesangel Re: unusual winged dragonfly? picture - August 19th, 2006 at 02:47 PM
Thank you Thorny! My goodness..it says the Eastern Pondhawk sometimes captures Damselflies. Bad dragonfly! lol

Sarah thank you so much for the compliments! The praying mantis photos are my fav. too. I'm sad to say he met an untimely death. ters He was on our steps when hubby left for work the next morning. I didn't want to look! I think the cat must have *played* with him. He will live on in his sweet pictures tho. Can you tell I love all critters? lol
