Lets Talk about Frogs....I have lots of little frogs in my yard and gardens...a variety of them.

Is it right that frogs are good for your garden because they eat insects?? Is there anything else beneficial that frogs do for the garden?? I have seen little "toad houses" for sale...So Toads must be beneficial somehow..

When it rains one or two will attach themselves to my vinyl siding under the porch light..."Little greeters" in the rain. I had a little light green one there the other day. I need to take some pictures...

Yesssssss, they are very beneficial..
But eating machines..
They are all good, none bad..

The "Toad Abode" is so cute and gives them
a moist dark, just their size home to hide out in
and have a safe refuge..
but a log or two put one over the other, so
there's a niche under it or some little place to hide does the trick too...

Yep... flies... bugs...
mosquito larve *if a pond or water area near by*

oh alright, they do eat a worm or two...
but they're still a good friend in the garden..
really...

The only one's that I know of that are dangerous,
are the brightly colored one's that are like found
in the rain forrests.. they're bright red, yellow, blue..
they're poisonous....

Hummmmm I always wonder about people who like to keep DANGEROUS pets. A neighbor down the street has a 14 ft long boa constrictor....EEK!!! DANGEROUS a boa constrictor can kill and swallow something half it's size sometimes bigger then that. So if his snake gets out it could kill and swallow a 7' tall person. That neighbor use to have lots of dogs who would sit on his front lawn...one by one the dogs started disappearing!!!!..I called the Sheriff..They went over there but said they could not prove anything and that they did not have the right to take the snake to a zoo..He does not have any dogs anymore. <frown> I hate to think about what happened to those dogs..

I LOVE frogs too!! I am always soooo pleased when I find one of those green smooth ones in a plant--like 2 yrs ago now I found one very comfortably at home in the opening at the top of a Canna leaf!! WOW!!

Oui is in Northern Alabama not far from the Tennessee line.

Oh--not that far really from me and NOT Florida!! hehehe Didn't know there were the kind of frogs that stick to walls there OR here. If i hadn't seen the little guy for myself I would never have believed it! hehehe Thanks for setting me strat Thornius!

We get little green "tree" frogs climbing on our siding during the warmer months. My neighbor had a snake get into her siding chasing a "tree" frog one day. Scared the tar out of her...

I LOVE frogs too! I love to pick them up and look at them (even though they have the urge to pee whenever I do pick them up!) not long ago we had a small tree frog clinging to our screen on the window in the kitchen and it was so cute! I can't wait till spring comes so I can see the froggies again!!

Yup--those are the little cuties I thought lived in Florida only--or south of South Carolina. Then I saw one (larger than that one) in my Canna!! Ohhhhhhh so cute!!!! I even like the old warty toad kind too--the brown and greenish black bumpy toad. Haven't seen any here but used to play with them all the time when we were in New York (I was born there--haven't been anywhere near in 21 yrs now)!!

yea those are mostly the kind we have here. the bumpy toad looking ones. but I think they are cute too! we also have salamanders here and they are soooo cool!

The teenie tiny green ones and teenie tiny black ones are the ones I find clinging to my vinyl siding during the rain...SOOOO CUTE and WITTLE, they make ya wanna talk baby talk.....<<smile>>

I have to look for the one I had of the tree frog in my Canna for you all to look at. Also foudn this year a whole bunch of baby grasshoppers in the top of a Canna--however I do nto have a good Zoom lens camera so the photos did not come out so good They were so CUTE!!

The weather is WEIRD here this time of year...Warm and sunny during the day 50-70 then COLD at night. I did see a frog the day I started this topic but haven't seen one since..Poor wittle cuties...They can't figure out whether to hibernate or come out and greet me.

They'll start coming out in about two months, Oui.

Thornius do you think that little one died cuz he came out of hibernation too soon???

Or can they just go back underground????

Okay I was reading articles about the benefits of frogs and toads in your garden.

Frogs and Toads benefit the garden because they eat SLUGS, and insects.

I had a problem a few years ago with Japanese beetles. SOOO I found a female Praying Mantis on a tennis court and brought it home and planted it in my front garden. I have noticed more praying mantis' since. And NO Japanese Beetles.

Do frogs and or toads eat Praying Mantis'??

It seems as if they do not because, I do have some large toads in my front flower beds <<where I put the Praying Mantis>> And the Praying Mantis' are not disappearing..

The Teenie Tiny Frogs eat aphids..

Nope--praying mantis can eat birds though!! A lady in one club I used to be in posted a photo of a hummingbird she found a praying mantis ripping the throat out of!! More thing!!! She couldn't BELIEVE it!! She heard the poor thing screaming from the road--by the time she got to it, it was dead!! It was several yards away from her in a field--in Texas I believe it was. (Course they grow everything BIGGER in Texas, eh?? Maybe that is why the PM was able to eat a poor Hummer?)

Okay now I am FREAKED out....I do not want the hummingbirds eaten..I suppose a large frog or toad could eat a hummingbird if they could catch them...

No I don't think a frog or toad would eat them,
maybe if it was already dead, it would eat the flies/bugs swarming around it...

Praying Mantis's are virocious appetits...
they'd eat each other if it came down to it...

Praying Mantis's DO eat each other. They'll even try to eat humans if they get a chance. I made the mistake of grabbing a full grown adult when I was a kid. He clamped down and ripped a 1/2 inch long gash in the web of skin between my thumb and first finger. I STILL have the scar it left.

Thornius you mean when I picked up that praying mantis from the tennis court it COULD HAVE BIT ME!!!!! EEK!!

LOL...oh yeah...they bite. HARD! I had three toads in my garden last year, and it was the first year I didn't have to use pestacides. I think I will be scouting the river banks in the spring for some garden residents.

I LOVE Praying Mantises, but I only look and NEVER touch (after that first experience). I spent all last Summer looking for one to photograph but never did find one.
