No, really. I have a plant that I bought at PetSmart (not sure what it is), that was meant to be in a tank with lizards and things - designed for humidity. I put it in my tank with my carnivorous plants. It looks like a Pothos, though I know it's not.

Anyway, it had these normal looking leaves until one day it sprouted a leaf that never opened. It looked like a little closed-up tube. Very cute, but never thought much of it. Tonight I got curious and stuck my thumb down the seam to see why it wouldn't open, or if it would at all. I found a long brown mass, that really looked just like a big turd. It was the strangest thing. I've never heard of plants pooping.

Anyone have any idea what this might be? In the first picture, it's what the little tube looked like AFTER I stuck my thumb in it. Before that, it was completely closed. Anyway here are some pics.

Oh I hope those were an OK size - sometimes it takes a minute or two before they size down.

They are still pretty big, but it's not too bad. Just a little scrolling of the page..

I am not sure what your plant is. The big leaves remind me of a "hosta", and the piece sticking up would make me think of the flower stalk it sends up. But umm.. that's not a flower in there that I can tell..lol. I hope someone else can come along & give you a clue. I am curious to know what it is too!

It looks like a Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema)to me.

Catlover-
My guess would be that the pistel/stigma(which ever part that is) rotted. Hopefully Will Creed will look at this and know. Mine has bloomed but it has never turned to mush so I'm unsure.

Hi Amber,

That's disgusting! What kind of animals do you have living among your plants?

Seriously, your plant is a Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema). The flower is what it is; it never really opens anymore than what you have seen. The "crappy" lookning part has rotted inside. That is unusual. However, keeping it in a terrarium-like environment with your carnivores is also unusual.

I suggest that you move it to a location where the humidity is lower and the soil dries out every 7 to 10 days.

Thanks for the replies! I don't have any animals in the tank, just carnivorous plants.

When I bought this plant, I bought it at Petsmart, in the aqarium section, and it said the plants were humidity-loving. I figured they would be just fine in the tank for a little decoration.

So it's just rotted material? What was it before it was rotted? Why didn't the leaf ever open?

I can't help on why it never opened but I can help on what it was. grinnnn
Here is what they look like normally. It was the inside of the flower. The part that would be fertilized for seed.

I finagled and finagled with my digital shots - tried to do them 400, but they were too small.

Now, I just pick the button that says 'half' and it seems to work out. Horizontals are around 600 x 500 and verticals are the other way 'round.

Sometimes I just do thumbnails.
