This is a volunteer that is growing on my compost pile. Since I took scraps from other people, I'm not sure what all could be in there. I have never seen anything like this. It has big leaves and big yellow flowers. Can anyone tell me what it is??? [Linked Image]

Ms8miranda,
Could be a zucchini, pumpkin, or watermelon???

Can you get us a picture of the flower with the "lump" under it *the female flower*.

Not sure if this is the picture you want or not. smile

I thought squash and melons grew on vines.

Not all squash grow on vines, quite a few varieties grow on plants just like yours. Has it produced any kind of fruit? Are you picking the flowers before they have a chance to fruit?
The flower definately looks like a squash of some sort.

No fruit yet. It got a late start so I doubt I'll have any fruit unless we have an exceptionally long summer (that would be nice)! grinnnn

I hope you have a long summer too! I would really like to find out exactly what that is grinnnn

Our resident Pumpkin Guy says you can cut the tips of the plants off, ****If it's a pumpkin, squash??? something or other***** without any harm to the plant, and will actually incourage the plant to finish producing the fruit it started to make...

If it's a Zucchini, there won't be any "ENDS" to it to snip....

How about another picture,
Of the ends of the plant?

(**Does it trail out or bush up???)
If it produces a trailing vine, like it's tryin' to escape from the plant, that's a squash/pumpkin.
If the leaves stay centralized and go up into the air a bit, it's a zucchini...

Please keep us posted! sca

Yep, I think you are right. Sure looks a lot like that picture. I guess I've never seen a zucchini plant before. The only squash I've grown is acorn squash and that grows on vines so [dummy me] I figured all squash grew on vines. grinnnn
