What is this? (Well, besides the weeds?) [Linked Image]
It sort of reminds me of the larger Hyacinth I have in the yard, but these are real tiny... maybe 2" tall. Last summer when I was weeding, I kept running into itty bitty bulbs (about the size of corn kernels), but what was growing out of them looked like spiky grass! I was tossing them out, but I guess I missed a few.
I didn't know that they were flowers! shocked
Maybe I shouldn't have thrown them away... they're kind of cute!

I also don't know what those little teeny Evergreen tree-looking things are in the foreground, but this is the only flower bed they're in, so I'm wondering if I should leave them alone! Duh Does anybody know what they are?

Hmmmm! So THOSE are Grape hyacinth, huh? I thought that Hyacinth were bigger plants (& "Grape" being the purple ones!) Duh They're in a spot that gets lots of water from where the hose leaks (I know, I know... I should fix that!), & succulents don't like that.
I will leave them alone though, & let you know what they do.

The Grape Hyacinth is pretty hearty as I've seen from my own... They multiply like crazy if left alone. I started out with 2 medium sized bulbs and when I went to transfer from container to ground, they had atleast 15 babies each. They're sweet smelling and attract alot of bee's.

The tree thingys... have you pulled one up to see if it's a bulb or rooted plant?

Weezie, are we talking about both the plants I asked about, or the "Grape Hyacinth"?
(Sorry... I seem to be muddling multiple plants in my questions lately!)

Guess what Merme... They multiply like crazy even when you DON'T leave them alone! There must have been 2,000 little bulbs there last year & I thought I got them all. From the looks of it this year, I missed about 800!

I don't know what you mean when you say "medium sized bulbs". These are maybe a little larger than a kernel of corn.

The tree looking thingys (Aren't we technical around here? laugh laugh ) are rooted. I'll take some pics tomorrow, after I hear back from Weezie.

So my "tomorrow" turned into 2 1/2 weeks shocked sorry about that! I didn't forget... just couldn't seem to get back over here!

Here are a couple close-ups of that "tree-looking stuff" (taken 9 days ago)...
weed-1.jpg" alt="[Linked Image]" class="post-image" style="height:auto!important;max-width:100%!important;"/>
Roots - not a bulb plant
weed-2.jpg" alt="[Linked Image]" class="post-image" style="height:auto!important;max-width:100%!important;"/>
It almost looks like a Juniper, but it's not. This is very soft to the touch, even though it looks spiky. (I don't have any Juniper anywhere close here, & even if Juniper makes seeds, Duh I can't believe that it would be as prolific as this is... it's really all over, in that one flower bed! And, it doesn't taste like Juniper!)

Here is what it looks like today... just 15 days since the first pic! (I've been weeding around it, just in case it's "something"!)
weed-34-18-06.jpg" alt="[Linked Image]" class="post-image" style="height:auto!important;max-width:100%!important;"/>
It's quite leggy & isn't very pretty at this point. I'm beginning to think that it IS a weed. [Linked Image]

Oh... and about the Grape hyacinth...

If that first pic I posted here is Grape hyacinth, then what is this?
[Linked Image]
(Just a Hyacinth that happens to be Grape colored?) Duh
This is what I thought a Grape hyacinth was... & didn't even know this was in my yard until it bloomed!

<i>Bear with me please... I know that my questions might seem brainless to some of you, but I'm learning! thumbup

That looks like the wild stuff we have growing around here. Lemme shoot off an email to my FIL and ask him what it is cuz I forgot.

If it is that, it has yellow flowers and gets tall. I like it but lots of people say they are weeds.

No, not for me,
I bought bulbs to plant...
So, they were paid for..

*but remember all plants are/were weeds somewhere's, and hybridizers just get ahold of
them and breed in good traits and breed out bad traits...*

I could say something funny there, but I'm not going too! wink wink

Thanks, Weezie! [Linked Image] I just knew it couldn't be a "weed"!

Of course, I'm finding out that some "weeds" are my favorite things! ("Weed" being classified as something that some people might not want in their gardens.) I'm anxious to know what the one is that Triss is thinking of... I really like the pink & white ones pictured in your link, & if they come in yellow too, maybe Triss can bring me some of those "weeds" when she comes to visit this summer! thumbup

OK now, you guys are getting way ahead of me here!

I love those other links, Weezie! I saw Anemones in my friend's garden last year & I do want to get some of those ... maybe I already have them, & they'll pop up in my yard! (I have no idea what all is out there!) flw

Ok, I heard back from my FIL. Here is what he had to say.

"That is Scotch Broom. I read in the paper recently that it chokes out
undergrowth and caused a higher than normal death rate from starvation this
year in the elk herds around Mt. St. Helens."

Did not find anything on it here in the forum other than that it is a weed .

Here is a link I found that shows more information on it. Scotch Broom

OK, I know what Scotch Broom is, without even looking at the links! (Thanks though, Triss... and please DO NOT bring me any!) laugh

Those are BUSHES, & if I'm not mistaken, they've been tagged as a noxious weed! I can't, for the life of me, figure out why Washington state has them growing all up & down the I-5 corridor along the mid hiway divisions! I don't think I know of a single person who isn't allergic to that stuff... it'll plug you up in nothing flat! When traveling in Washington, we roll up all the windows when we see it, because the air is thick with the pollen when they're in bloom!

Since I'm so new at this gardening stuff, I think that a lot of my plants feel exactly that way about my exhuberance while I'm learning! [Linked Image]

patty, the second purple flower you have is, wood hyacinth, IS a weed and an aggressive one at that. Worse than the grape hyacinth. It's very hard to get rid of.

Earthnut, I've discovered that some of my favorite plants are "weeds"! grinnnn I think I'll add this one to that list!

Now I need to come up with a new term for "weeding"! [Linked Image]

Weezie, remember these "tree looking" plants that we talked about on page one here?
[Linked Image]

Well, I still don't know what they are, but now I know how they got there! I had forgotten that I'd found them in the field last year & dug one up & transplanted it in a flower bed in the yard, because I thought the little delicate blue flowers were pretty! When the flowers turned into little pods, I smooshed them up between my fingers & broadcast the seeds all over, in the flower bed.
[Linked Image]
They're actually pretty spindly looking plants, & each "branch" puts out only one little blossom. They are indeed, delicate... not good for flower arrangements, as the petals fall of very easily.

[Linked Image]

I think that if there were enough of them, it'd look pretty nice. (Yes, I know they're weeds & I suppose a lot of people hate them, but I think that if they're controlled, they'd be just fine.) I'm going to have to watch them closely when the flowers turn into seed pods, making sure that they stay IN the flower bed & NOT on my new lawn!

Happy gardening!

Who decided a weed was a weed anyway?

Who looked at a dandelion one day and said, they aren't important flowers, they're just weeds? laugh

Patty - those little blue flowers are blue flax.
I got some seeds for them last winter, but they aren't doing much so far this spring.

Here's a google link to images:

Lynne, I wonder if the Blue Flax seeds that you bought spread out like these plants do. (I assume they're "normal" Blue Flax & not the wild type like I drug up from my field here!) I sorta wish that just one of these plants (the wild ones) wasn't so far-reaching & spindly... it'd take LOTS & LOTS of them to make a bed look really nice, but I think they'd actually look fine in a bed of other wild flowers.

Gotta really watch those when they go to seed though! I can see how they could be a big problem, especially in lawned areas, cuz last year I had only ONE of those plants, & I deliberately picked off the seed pods & spread them around in that bed... trust me, there are LOTS of them there this year!

I know it's been almost 2 weeks since you posted above... sorry about that. I finally got my links all rounded up & organized, & am finding all the old threads I thought I'd lost track of! Gosh, I sure jumped around a lot with this topic... I started out asking about the Grape Hyacinth & foolishly included the Wild blue flax in the same post!
I hate when I do that! [Linked Image]
