I spotted this in my backyard this morning. I'm assuming it's some type of weed that's just spreading but it sure has pretty colours. Could someone tell me what this is?

But after re~reading it, you put the
ball there for size????

The weed, purple*ish*/green is called Ajuga Ground Cover

Another Ajuga

Thanx Weezie.....and yes the ball is there for size...probably should have mentioned that in the first post.
I checked out your link and I don't see it saying anything about being a weed? If it does flower, I don't think I'd want to get rid of it and my understanding of most weeds is "Get rid of 'em!!"

Every plant comes from "weeds"
They're hybridized to maybe take out some
of the "WEEDINESS" out of the plants,
and keep the better traits of some...

You just have the Wild plant...

It's a pretty plant, coloring, flower, and does
a nice job for ground covering....
but be careful about WHERE YOU PUT THEM...
they are a weed, and are can be aggressive.....
If you want them to hold back a steep back, etc.
they're great...

There are several lovely forms of cultivated ajuga(bugleweed). I have the purple and green weed form in my yard and it works as a great grass/weed deterant under and around larger plants.

I have that ajuga growing in my yard too. It's very pretty when it blooms.

weeds are plants that are growing where you don't want them growing.

Once they are growing where you want them, they are no longer weeds.

Case closed.

I agree with you weezie13. wavey , I am enclosing 2 pictures of my Ajuga blooming early this summer so you will have an idea what it looks like in bloom. They are gorgeous, but keep it contained or it will take over everything. I try to keep it confined to a small area. lala

This picture looks more mauve but it is really such a pretty bright blue colour.

I love my ajuga plants. I have them planted in the front of the house and they really look pretty when they are blooming. I will probably plant some down in the triangles on the sides of my driveway and pray it takes over. Gotta claim the land back from the weeds that I don't like...
