I was "patrolling" the back yard with the baby and found a few of these blooming.

The tallest was about 3 inches tall. What in the world is this?? Is it a wildflower or "escaped" domesticated plant?

Looks like a Johnny Jump-up or that is what my mama always called them. I have them pop up all over my yard I believe its the same flower. I will look it up and try to find a pic of one.

They pop up all around my yard too. Don't know what they're called. I just enjoy them until the lawnmower gets 'em.

I know there are differeny colors of johnny jump ups but looking at the leaves, I am unsure these are the same. Hopefully someone will come along soon to help

Tonya your photo is a bit small to really tell what it is.. but as far as I can tell it looks like a spiderwort.

Is there any way you can blow it up?

I have some Spiderwort in my backyard and by the look of the leaves, it looks the same. Mine has got pretty tall and blooms many flowers. Thanks Christina for telling us the name of that plant because I have been wondering myself.

Looks like spiderwort to me too.
Johnny jump ups are much more minipansy looking.

It isn't spiderwort I don't think. I have that,too and the leaves are different as well as the "pods" that the flowers bloom from. I will get more pics this morning. brb.

Me, too! lol I have "found" lots of stuff this year because our mower was busted and things got to grow that had never grown before!

I have a plant called a 'day flower' with identical bright blue flowers. It is considered a weedy form of tradescantia; a cousin to spiderworts and wandering jews. The leaf form on mine appears different than yours. Mine has green wandering jew type leaves and is a vining type plant. Yours looks more like spiderwort type leaves
If you take one of the flowers and pinch it between your fingers it will pretty much disappear with a little bit of blue stain left.

It is definately a Spiderwort If allowed to grow it can reach 2ft in height. It grows wild all over down here. They also have other colors available.

I really don't think that is what it is...I have spiderwort in other areas of the same unmowed yard and it is over a foot tall. Is there a dwarf version? these plants are only about 2-3 inches tall. I dunno...thanks, tho!

Looks like Blue Eyed Grass.

Tina seems to be the winner...the flowers do disappear with a blue stain left. She calls it "day flower" I had to wait until another one bloomed so I could test this theory. I have spiderwort everywhere, but htis plant is so different, that I knew it wasn't that unless dayflower is a form of spiderwort. Anyway! I have found a whole slew of them around my house. Thanks guys!

How about purple violets.. They grow wild????
