fennel dilemma

Hey,

I grew some bronze or anise fennel this year, don't remember which. I thought they had large rootbases like the ones in the store... mine are 4' tall and flowering so I picked a couple... their roots were large, white and carrot - like. What is wrong with this picture?

here's some info about bronze fennel

looks like that's the correct type of root for that particular fennel.
