Another thought, and this is something I have been kicking around.

I have an old "SuperSingle" waterbed in my garage, the frame and the liner would make an excellent raised container garden.

The side are 2X8's and the bottom is 3/4 plywood, and with the base, it stands about 3' high. If it will hold a couple hundred gallons of water and a fat man like me. I think it will hold up some dirt and flowers. I would have to attach some kind of drain to the side of the bed.

Just a thought.

I just bought 7 laundry baskets at Dollar General for $1 each. I'm kicking around some ideas for growing things in them...potatoes would be ideal. I may use shade cloth around the outside to protect from U.V. damage to the plastic. I'll try growing spinach and some other cool season things in them, as well. Any ideas/suggestions, anyone?
Pat...sounds like you've got a ready made planter there! thumbup

Dave, how deep are the baskets? Won't the dirt cost a lot?

Oh, hi, Sheri! No one replied for a while and I forgot about my post.
I planted the taters in about 4 inches of soil, some from the garden and some bagged. I lined the insides of the basket with newspaper, and put a few inches of leaves in. The taters are growing, but I think flea beatles or something is making the leaves look a little sad. I' going to pick the lower leaves and add more stuff...It's like the straw method, no additional soil will go in. So far the newspaper is holding up well...
I just thought that a doolar each was a great deal for large containers, and I thought Maybe they would actually be useful...

You could use landscape fabric too,
cut to size..
I do that in my containers on the bottom so the
dirt doesn't fall out of those gigantic holes... thumbup

The girl upstairs just gave me her old Ikea bed frame..
*I'm going to use the long piece to grow either peas or climbing vines..

I have used old bed parts for fences , trellises to have climing roses on , gates to the garden spot . I never throw old metal or even wood bed parts out . I use them for lots and lots of projects . Even the ladders make great trellises and if hung from a porch you can hang planters on them too . I have one on my side porch . It looks great . Just screw in plant hooks , tie rope or add chains from the hooks to the ladder . It works great .

Dave, I've used laundry baskets lined with grocery bags and successfully grew tomatoes, strawberries, flowers, herbs, and peppers.
