Actually, I've learned recently there are magnolia that will grow in zone 5. Some grow all the way up to Maine. I always associated the tree with the south, but it turns out to have the more cold resistant strains too.

I'm looking at the information I got recently, Magnolia grandiflora is know as Southern Magnolia and is for the warmer zones. There are actually a number of types listed for zone 5. I'll be happy to list them out if you want. I'm fairly new to gardening, so I've been accumulating info. When I saw the magnolia info, I kept it, as I assumed I wouldn't be able to have one up here in New Hampshire. Unfortunately, I can't help to ID the tree in your picture though.
