When I looked out at the pond this morning I could see my goldfish swimming around the edge of the pond..splashing and swimming in groups. I mean, they were about jumping out of the pond! They are still doing it, 2 hours later. Is there something wrong with the pond water causing them to do this? It's gotten quite a bit of algae in it over the winter.

OK...here are some pictures. They are still doing it, splashing around and getting up in the plants, like they are trying to get out of the water ...and chasing each other around. Same thing going on over on the other side of the pond... Excuse my ignorance, but could they be having sex? If I have just posted pictures of my goldfish doing it, somebody please tell me so I can delete it! If that's not what they're doing, I am worried about them!

Well, if they are in fact "reproducing" then I have a serious problem, because I do NOT want anymore goldfish! 5 goldfish turned into 80+ last year because of them doing this. If I get the same amount of babies per adult this year, I will have WAY over 1,000 goldfish. Is there something I can do at this point to get rid of the eggs... ...before they hatch? (They do have eggs, don't they?...or are they born alive from the mommy?)

Maybe I need to buy a goldfish book. I googled "goldfish sex" and couldn't come up with anything.

CINDY - ACT FAST!!! Just found this in a google search for ya... In goldfish and Siamese fighting fish, the female can be mortally injured during mating. Goldfish may be pummelled into the sand; Siamese fighting fish may be squeezed too energetically by males hoping to extract extra eggs.

Here's more info, about goldfish in tanks, but I'm sure it would apply outdoors as well... GOLDFISH MATING HABITS!!! (SHOCKING!!) Not really. But it makes for a good show. When the water warms up, you will see one fish chasing another (or a whole production of fish doing this) madly through the tank. No, they are not fighting! The male smells the female's ripened eggs (still in her egg sac) and chases her. As she swims, she lays the eggs (hundreds, probably thousands of them). They are compressed, in her body. When they hit the water, they expand, but they are still small. The male will fertilize the eggs as they descend. It can be quite a frenzied sight, so MAKE SURE the tank cover is on securely (as it should ALWAYS be). The fish can also both get SUPER TIRED from mating, so it would be a good idea to separate the males from the females if you don't want this behavior (one tank for each the guy fish will get together and chew the fat "Hey, that lady fish yeah, I usta know her", or something like that, and the lady fish will probably discuss the latest in flowing fins. Just kidding.)
HOW OFTEN DO THEY MATE??? They could do it every week if they are physically capable of it. That means, lots of eggs to clean out, and it does smell (although they will eat some eggs, most of them don't get eaten). Well, maybe you could let them mate once, and then separate them. Goldfish CANNOT be spayed or neutered. about goldfish

Holy Koogamooga, Lynne! That's exactly what they're doing!!! (ooops...I mean "reproduce".) So, this has all come as a shock to me...the whole deal. And, the fact they they are all related makes me wonder now if they are going to be "normal"...because of inbreeding. (They will probably all end up looking alike!) the female can be mortally injured during mating. This disturbs me.....

They will probably all end up looking alike! Variety is the spice of life, right Cindy??? You're not the only one who didn't know... I thought the female laid the eggs and the male came along and fertilized... Poor ladies... hope they survive!!!

I took some food out to them to try to calm them down for awhile...don't know if that was a good or bad idea. I really don't want the males to keep their strength up and end up hurting the females, but I wanted the females to get some energy to fight off the males. They all stopped what they were doing and started devouring the food. I asked if any of them wanted a cigarette and none of them spoke up.
