Bible Gardens....

I've been doing some researching on them...
And I know one or two of our members have them.
But I just wanted to post them and information to see if anyone had anything to add to them...

or even might want to start one..

Weezie, bless you! This is such an interesting type of garden. I believe there's one at an old Episcopal church in Chicago; I'll have to find out for sure. Have you ever heard of Shakespearian (sp?) gardens? I think they were all the rage at one time and were designed to use all the plants/flowers mentioned in his works. It's amazing how many different garden themes there are, isn't it?

No, I haven't heard of the Shakespearan *sp* one's. I'll have to do some hunting for some info.

I had heard of the Bible Gardens, and The Blessed Virgin Mary Gardens... With the Mary gardens, each flower represented a part of Mary...
And the Bible one's are also Medicinal values' or properties...as like Jesus healed the sick...

All quite interesting....

This is interesting..i have never heard of any of these kinds of gardens. Could you tell me more about them, or give me a link where i can read more? We don't have much garden activity in norway, so i havn't heard of much of the things others thinks is common knowledge.

They are a wonderful!!!

For the Mary Gardens, each plant represents a part of Mary, and many gardeners have many different ideas on how to do them...
They will find a statue of Mary for the center attraction, usually and plant the flowers in some formation around her....

For the Bible Gardens, each plant represents a plant that was mentioned in the Bible, ***most are believed to be used as medicinal plants, or in a healing process as did Jesus healed the sick.* Not that he used them, but the regular folks used by trial and error into finding cures for what ailed them longggggggggggg before modern medicine came along and "take two aspirin's and call me in the morning came about"

No, I'm too scatterbrained to stick to a list for the garden. I have a hard enough time keeping track of what I planted where, lol! I have tried growing different flowers for several reasons; lots of times because I read about them in a novel or a mystery. Some I've tried to grow because they grew where my Mom was raised in Austria and where my great-aunt lived in Holland during the war. Some I get the "gotta have its" for when I see them in a magazine or at a botanical garden and then the hunt is on! Many of the plants I chose became prolific growers and others just faded away. It's always fun to stretch a little and see what I can do. My goal this year is to put in more perennials for bloom in July and August in yellow, orange, magenta and purple--hot colors for hot times! Much of the season will be spent redoing a 25' long raised bed along the foundation wall. I've ignored it for the past couple of years and now must pay the piper, lol.

Hi Weezie! You gotta know I'll be posting on this one. My cottage, pond, and patio gardens are older and more established, so there are more photos of those. Only 3 shots right now on the Biblical (since until last fall it was just a regular garden). But I'm sure many more will be going up as the project progresses this year. Right now the daffodils are dominant. Check my photos at

I think that is such a nice idea that you do that for the church...and what fun!!!
I dont' have enough "cut flowers" to do that.....

I always have little flowers *like for pansy sized flowers* and am always looking for tiny flower vases, but not much luck finding them...

ButonsMom !!!!!!!!! What a beautiful idea, a Bible garden !!!!!!!!!!! I have long been interested in the herbs of the Bible. I used to toy with the idea of putting theme herb bowls together for sale, using herbs of the Bible, such as mint, rue, hyssop, and cilantro (the seeds are what is coriander).
Your phrase, "Thyme Began in a Garden" is beautiful ! The Garden of Eden !

ButtonsMom... I saw your pictures! Wonderful!! Funny how a lot of us have some of those same flowers in your own yard I also have angelstatues and Mother Mary of Jesus Statues I'd never hear of this untilll now How wonderful!

If I ever have time, hahahahaha, I'm going to do those...

I have a Mary statue, just a little one...

And I have my eye on a St. Francis Statue at my local grocery story, it's pretty tall too, but out of my budget right now..

This is a question for Buttons Mom, did your hoya flowers smell like chocolate when they bloomed? I had a hoya a few years ago that bloomed profusely and the blooms smelled like chocolate. Unfortunately this hoya like two since developed a bad case of bugs and died. Now I'm working on a perennial garden. I will post pictures as soon as we get a new camera.

No, my hoya doesn't smell like chocolate at all. In fact, it has a rather unpleasant odor. If it weren't so pretty, I wouldn't keep it around.

Buttonmoms, your garden is just beautiful. Especially the Bible Garden and the Pond. Wish I had that much room. Envy!!!! lol Sue

The Bible garden is a work in progress and constantly changing. Right now we are creating a natural rock wall behind it. (Visual separation between my garden and a rather unruly field) At first I was looking into one of those pricey walls from a dealer, but too expensive and I couldn't get the right effect. So, DH has been gathering huge red rocks for me and we're using them. In front of the wall will be a small rock waterfall and bench.

We're using the rocks for the base of my new bench, and a hand cut 3" plank of wood for the seat.

New additions this year: Grapevine, several grasses (including Morning Light and Elijah blue), "Remember Me" Hosta, Aloe, Sago Palm, and some tiny blue Forget-me-nots (placed by a sleeping angel to honor a grandchild we lost).

I'll post the photos on webshots when it's done.
