can I put them in the compost pile? And when it's time to clean up the rest, like tomatoes, squash, pepper plants, can these be put in the compost pile too?

Did you have any disease's in your tomato plants,
or grubs in the squash plants??
I burn those..
*Cause I have the disease and it over winters,
even in a compost pile and the pile can never get HOT enough to kill that disease off*

I pull 'em out, let them dry off to the side and start a fire when I have enough to do..
(or if we have a bonfire I throw them in then.)

My plants have been beautiful this year. No problems at all. So, I guess that means I can put them in the pile. Right?

I went out today and looked at my cukes again and now they have blooms all over them. Parts of them look dead and dried up but I guess they're not ready to give up the ghost just yet.

Well, I went out last evening and got a few cukes off my "dried up" plants and ate one for lunch today. They still have more blooms. And to think I was ready to make compost out of them.

still getting cucumbers from my dead plants. It's so funny because these plants look brown and dried up, but yesterday there were 2 great looking cukes ready for eating. And there are more blooms on the brown vines.

I have tons of cukes on my brown vines also, but most of mine are yellow. I've started cleaning up in my garden, but haven't gotten to the cucmber row yet. I cut a piece out of one that had turned almost brown (wanted to save some seeds) And even though it was huge and had changed to brown the cuke still tasted good.

My cukes are a bit yellow too, I have cleaned up my onions and beans. have to mators etc in the next week or 2.
hard to let go. I also will be burning my squash as it was sick this year.

I got the last of the cucumbers this weekend because my husband cleaned everything out. That's what I get for not communicating better. I might have been able to get a few more, but there's always next year. I still have green bell peppers growing though.

Amen to that Weezie ....Years ago DH and I had this huge fight in the middle of the garden over green beans, I pulled every one of the plants and tossed them into a pile over the fence, After that I never grew green beans again until last year, But we have come to an understanding about the garden. He gets the ground ready for me in the spring and helps put the tomato cages and any stakes that need to be put in, other then that the garden is off limits to him or anyone else unless I ask for help or invite them to walk in my garden. We get along fine now when it comes to gardening...If he wants to tell me how to do something..fine then he can take care of growing what ever it is. One year he said "we" should grow something and I said..I don't know a thing about growing that, then I went and found a couple books about the subject and told him...here you read all about it and YOU can grow it It has taken a lot of years to work out all the rules for having a garden, there can only be one garden boss but don't come crying to me when it doesn't work out. I've been working on getting my garden cleaned up, I've started on the cucumber row, but it is slow going on the ends of the row. My bell peppers are looking great and really need to do something with what is left, before its too cold, they are loaded and I also cleaned them up and weeded them. I'll probable dehydrate some of them.

I don't even get that much co~operation any more..

He can nottttt for the life of him understand why I like to grow tomatoes.. he just want's me
to buy them in the stores, like every other "normal" person... :rolleyes:


But my garden is a mess this year...
I am sooooooo disgusted with it..
Those woodchucks are soooooo on my sh!t list..
I can't stand it, how much damage they did this year..

I have to have a fence if I am going to continue to garden... this year is the WORST..

I don't even have to worry about "cleaning up my gardens" this year.... THEY ATE EVERYTHING.. THERE'S NOTHING LEFT...

do you have cats? I think our cat keeps every varmit away from here. I have seen a squirrel around lately but she'll eventually run it away.

No cats, no dogs..
*we did up on the hill at my parents house,
and they had a reasonable amount of goodies constantly from the garden, every year..
*dogs' ran free too, no dog chains*

but here in town there is no dog activity...

I do have the neighborhood cats... I see them constantly lookin' for field mice and such..
*they (the cats) aren't here during the summer though, when we have the 30 or so Turkey Vultures that nest in my mom's back trees, when they have their babies.. as soon as those babies learn to fly and everyone's off, then the cats come back.. buttttttt they don't help one bit with those d@mned woodchucks..
Not one tomato either *well, a few cherry tom's, the one's they couldn't push the cages' over...*

I am this close to not gardening next year...

We have alot of cats here and there are no squirels or rabbits, but plenty of other critters that can do ALOT of damage to a garden in one night, even with a fence.

One nice thing sorta is you can "plunk" them
in the country.. can't do anything to them here..
in town.. Only the humane traps, but after awhile, they are on to those, and won't go near them....... stink~pots
