I've been doing a bit of research trying to get some tips to start a compost.. All the articles I have read say that the compost should be in a wood bin which I do not have.
What if I started it in a plastic bucket? Would that work?
Also, should the contents be chopped up in small pieces? (We were just away and a head of cauliflower went bad)

So I just put some soil in the bottom and add the stuff on top?

A compost pile doesn't even need to be in a container at all.

I make wire bins about 3 feet across. John's right, if you don't have anything, just pile leaves, kitchen scraps (no meat) grass clippings etc. in a pile...you'll find lots of information in the section Organically Speaking.
