Hi.

I was given a piece of my mom's Christmas cactus. It has a woody base stem and a bunch of "leaves" coming from it. The woody stems has some very small and fine roots at the bottom.

I put it in cactus and succulent soil and have been lightly watering every few days or so. The heat is drying the soil out very quickly in my apartment. I also put a clear plastic bag over it with slits for humidity.

Did I start this out the right way? Please let me know.

Thanks.

Sounds good, Amany.

Just be careful not to raise the humidity too much with the plastic bag,
that could lead to rot.

This site has some great tips for successfully growing
Zygocactus ("Christmas cactus").

I plant my christmas cactus directly into regular soil.......From outside, It roots and grows like a charm......
They like being crowded and arent particular, except they prefer shade.
