TOMATO Part I

The catalogs 'jersey flavor'may mean about a famous grower/hybridizer of tomatoes. I know his name,but it eludes my mind today.I know he died at the age of 95 and passed down his growings through his family.had a brother who hybridized also.His favorite creation was the brandywine pink.

Njoynit, the origin of Brandywine is not known. There have been many stories about where certain strains and crosses have come from but ultimately noone knows where the true brandywine came from.

The whole Jersey Flavor thing has something to do with the variety "Rutgers" that was developed at Rutgers Univ. in New Jersey for the Campbell Soup Co years ago. That's what they made their famous tomato soup with. I think thats how the story goes. Don't quote me.

This is what I dug up.
From what mr.Tom had said.He himself had been growing the same strain 63 years.His father& grandfather before him had grew these same seeds.I rember he had yellow rags on stakes.those were ones he took seeds from.
I believe rutger was the name mentioned about jersey taste.Wish my mind was filed better.alot gets lost in 4 years.

I grew the Rutgers for the last 2 years,
they weren't a bad tomato at all..
I liked them..

Wow Njoynit & John...where did you read/find this history on tomatoes? I do know the story about Mortgage Lifters and how they got their name, I read about that in a seed catalog years ago.

You've got some kind of LEAF MINOR,
**I personally never had a leaf minor on a tomato,
had them on my columbine**

but they are basically harmless to your tomato production, that I know of...
You can pull/pinch the effected leaves.....

Weezie is right on though. Looks like leaf miners.

Comfrey, there are many sites that give a history of varieties. I think I posted a link somewhere here about the Brandywine history.

I'm really sorry about that family "unfriendly" link. Yes they are leaf miner's. Thank you. I even referred the photo to a forum on the local agricultural university website and they confirmed that it was leaf miner. They even gave me the names of the pesticides to be used. If anybody wants it I can post it here.
