I got this planter for my mom at Ikea.
It's really the perfect Mother's Day gift, because my parents play golf a lot, and my dad makes things from golf balls, such as tables, lamps, clocks, birdhouses, etc. And this looks just like an enormous 1/2 golf ball.

Problem is, that there is no drainage in it, so how do I plant annual flowers in it so they don't rot from sitting in water? My mom tends to overwater no matter how many times I ask her not to.

Lynne, could you have Don drill you a couple of drainage holes in the bottom of it? Jim is always drilling holes in pots for me...

By the way, where did you find such a cute planter? Jim is a golfer, too, and it would look so cute hanging in his office at work...

Dianna, what kind of drill and bit would you use???

I was thinking that, Dianna - but I'm not sure if it would crack or not...

I got it at Ikea - their online catalogue says it's "only available in their stores". It is EXTREMELY HEAVY, so shipping would be too costly.

there are special drill bits called tile bits that work on ceramic tiles. Should work on that.
or put a plastic pot inside it with drainage.

On some of my pots, Jim just used a regular drill with the tiniest bit he had. Have Don drill real slow if he tries this, though, because it could break...

accccccccck - he drilled one hole and it chipped off the outside finish. Now he's trying to figure out what to do next...

thats what ikea would do.

Don't drill from inside, the white is prolly some type of coating and if you drill from the inside it will flake the coating off even worse. If you have a small punch you that to score the place where you want to make the hole. Then use the smallest bit you have and start at the slowest speed your drill will go down to. As long as you keep the drill straight you should be fine.

Don did start with the small drill bit and slow at first, and yes, it does have a ceramic coating on the outside - that is what chipped a bit.

Fake flowers are out - I'm not a fan of them, and this will be outside hanging from a tree.

He won't have time to work on it today, but that's fine because I didn't get flowers today either - the small private nursery where I've been buying for years really jacked their prices up, blaming it on gas prices and transportation - which is crazy because they grow their own plants and do not transport them in nor out! I realize supply prices have probably gone up, but not that much...

Just the one hole is fine, then take a plastic pot with drainage holes that is slightly smaller than the golf ball pot and set it inside . Do your planting in the smaller pot.
