hi,


i planted about half a dozen cannas in my front gardn and they told me to unearth the bulb in fall and put it inide but i really don twant to is there something i can cover it with this winter and leave it in my garden.

Hi Francine, haven't seen you on for awhile. I'm pretty positive that you will have to dig them up...When the ground freezes I believe it harms or kills the bulbs. In the southern states: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Miss, Alabama, Lousianna, Georgia, North & South Carolina, Tennessee & Virginia...They do not need to be dug up. Elsewhere dig up in the fall after blackend by frost, dry a few days, store upside down in dry peat moss or vermiculture at around 50-60 degrees.

thanks for the advice,so when the leaves will be all dead you tell me to dig it up ,can i cut the plant to the ground and just dig up the bulb?after i dry the bulb i just put it upside down in vermiculite all winter,is that it ? sory i m kinda slow tonite,i mpooped and just came to see if anyone had answered me and you dear lady did and i thank you so much.

do i put the hole thing in paper bag and store it in the garage for winter or should i put them in something else,what do you recemment?

can t i before the frrost dig them up,put them in a big pot and put them inside so th ey ll keep on growing?

i just put pictures of the montreal botanical garden in my photobucket if you want to look at them,don t really look at me as i grew rounder a bit but since the picture i ve lost 12 pounds so it s a difference.

you'll definately have to dig them up.And yes you could pot them& grow over,but will have to find some bright lighting(lighting different in winter)and you'll have to keep them back from the window so the cold air from window don't get your foliage.My friend in wisconson digs hers and stores in peat or saw dust in some of them clear storage containers & she takes them them silicone gel things from shoe boxes and stuff and tosses a few inside.she says she sprouts them in container she watches them& when the eyes show life she will either fill container with soil& let start growing or go on and place in ground.She said shes lost some of them cause sometimes the soil was still to cold.she did the temp grow in container last yr& had only lost 2. she said she grew them in goat manure this year and they've bloomed more.
Cause of your longer winter season....I'd store them.

i ll do like your friend and put them bulbs in a storage bin with a few silicone pouches,put them away from window but in full light,i like that,specialy the silicone part(ummmmmmmmmmm lets see,in me or in my plant.naa,defenitly in the plant bin..it s WWWWWAAAAYYYYYYY cheaper )

They will slow down in the cooler weather.The frost will zap the foliage and you can cut off.Some let the frost zap them some don;'t.but they cut the foliage off and wash them up get them dry& store them up.
growing over= letting them continue to grow on past their season.
Cannas grow best with heat.they like a warm soil.Mine stay in ground cause my grow season is very mild& my ground don't freeze& rarely have freezes lasting over 6 hrs(I can be 30 at nite& the next day be in the 60s-70s even 80s& its still winter)For me in Febuary I'll start covering my cannas at nite with buckets,pails,plant containers...... to save the foliage cause my cannas try to keep growing all winter especially when have lots of warmer days.By the 2nd week of March I'm useually past my last frost.Now a lil south of me(zone 9 Some cannas grown in micro pockets like brick walled areas will still be tall and even blooming.I went to houston for a DR appt last yr in feb& seen a group of cannas blooming,yeah....they did have a lil bronzeing on leafs from frost...but was neat to see blooming.I'm also closer to the sun in winter.


I'm in zone denial anyway....I enJOY cheating mother nature...

boy,woudn t i like to be in your zone,i could make them grow over but being wher i am now i ll settle with doing like your friend does and hoping for the best next year...........darn winter!!
