What's for Thanksgiving??? Just curious! I am a strict traditionalist, basic turkey, gravey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, peas, rolls, cranberry sauce, green & black olives, stuffing and acorn squash......... That's about it, Nothing fancy, lots' of kids that turn their noses up (did I say how old those kids were?) But, I love hearing about recipes, and what people do for ideas for other people. Thanks for sharing!!! Weezie

Whoops! forgot to list "Grandma's Smothered Green Beanz" on my menu! Here's the recipe: 1 lb fresh greean beans, snapped into 2" pieces. 6 bacon strips, fried until crunchy, broken into small pieces. Reserve grease. 1 onion, diced. 2 large tomatoes, chopped. salt pepperSautee onions in bacon grease until transparent. Add grean beans. Stir & toss until mixed. Add tomatoes on top. Don't stir. Cover. Lower heat & simmer for 15-20 mins until the liquid from tomatoes has bubbled for awhile & the beans are soft.. Add bacon, cover & simmer for 10 more minutes. Add salt & pepper to taste. High-cholesterol comfort food!!!! (Compliments of JC2's late grandma, Belle) Note: I also use this recipe for yellow crook-neck squash and zuccini. Yumski!

Yeah, Weez, It's one of those even-better-the-next-day things. I always make more than we're going to eat for that meal. When I use squash, I melt chedder cheese over the top before serving. BAM!

Jillie, My father said it came from his boyscout trips?? It's done two different ways, I always thought he made the name up, but Bill said he'd heard of it too, so, but it was a reasonably quick meal to make, mother always had that on the days she'd go grocery shopping cause it was quick to make. I personally never liked it, don't like cooked tomatoes tooooo~toooooo much>>?? I do in soups, mine, home grown, one or two. I liked the bacon, and I'd pull that out with some juice.. Weezie

weird work schedules here, so we will have breakfast of: either pancakes or french toast with: bacon homemade strawberry syrup cool whip cane syrup maybe home made blue berry syrup then for the afternoon/evening we will have: turkey gravy bread/sausage dressing oyster cornbread dressing corn mashed potatoescandied sweet potatoesgreen beans or lima beans pumpkin pie pecan pie carrot cake chocolate pecan pie rolls or biscuits bread machine bread. if we were having the traditional thing, we would also have ham, plain bread dressing, plain cornbread dressing, green peas, cranberry sauce, and what ever else "dropped in". this year, no visitors, work schedules are making it feel weird.

Hey, do you think there's a market for a holiday food clothing line, for cooks and diner's alike? The promo could go like this:
"Now available in colors that grace your holiday table; Gravy Beige, Cranberry Stain, Turkey Grease and our special favorite, Pumpkin Pie Smear. All garments constructed with our patented triple-expansion hidden waistband. Order yours in time for the holidays!"

Got my free turkey last night. If you spend $75.00 at Ralph's, the turkey of your choice is subtracted from your bill. Hooo, ha! With the VON's grocery strike going on, there aren't many markets that can keep stocked for the increased business, so food shopping is getting tricky, here. I will not cross a picket line (even if I don't agree, I don't mess with their process), so I searched for a non-striking market that had a parking space. Whew, THAT chore is behind me.

I donated my free turkey from Tops Markets... Get one free Tops Turkey or a % off a name brand turkey.... Or 10% off your grocery bill if you have 250 points for shopping there.
My husband gets a fresh turkey from his work every Thanksgiving!!!! So, I figured someone gives us a beautiful turkey, I could donate the one I earned.. I would hope someone would do that for me, and my family if I was in hard times...... Hey, if everyone donated at least one item, those pantries would be filled....
Especially in the holiday seasons........
Weezie

The gorcery workers don't want to have to contribute to their medical coverage. Jeeze, with the rising costs of med insurance, it's my personal opinion that it's kinda worth it to contribute to the company's costs to keep workers and their families insured. 'course, I'm speaking from the position of being currently UN-insured.

This strike thing is out of control. Now the warehouse workers are in on it too starting today. They aren't even negotiating!! It started with just the checkers, bag people, butchers, and other members of this one union. It was the big three grocery stores out here, Ralphs (Kroegers), Albertsons, and Vons. After the fires they stopped picketing at Ralphs, although the people didn't go back to work, they just moved their forces to the other two stores. I tried not crossing any picket lines but its hard when the only other stores around don't double coupons and don't have the stuff you buy. Even when Ralphs went to not having picket lines they still didn't have everything and you really have to check the dates on any dairy, meat, eggs. Now Ralphs is getting better but if you shop at the other two stores you have to deal with the people picketing and now they are going to start running out of food with no one delivering any. All because they don't want to pay any part of their medical. Before it was all paid by the company, now they would have to pay a $5 a month for a single, or $15 a month for a family, $10 co-pays and the coverage would be 80/20 for most large things. The big part that they are striking for is that they are going to limit their choices of doctors/ groups and hospital coverage went to only 50%. Plus they want to cap wages for checkers. And I'm sure there are other details they are mad about too, but that's the main part. I understand that they want things to stay the same but at least negotiate and talk about it. Its been months now... And the people picketing are getting paid strike pay, but that's only $300 a week if they picket a full 40 hours. Then after taxes and everything... those people aren't going to have a very Merry Christmas if this doesn't stop soon. All because the union won't talk to the stores. Sorry this is so long but it justs gets me so and .

People are a gimmme, gimme society now, "I do all this work for you, you need to pay me more, I'm so irreplaceable." As a former restaurant worker, it was so hard to find someone that didn't think they were doing YOU the favor of showing up to work..... I was trained, if your place of business didnt' make money, I didn't have a job to come to tomorrow, I worked for the owner.....I do expect to be paid a reasonable wage for my imput into a business, but understand that I CAN"T get paid $100,000.00 an hour....the worth that I think I am. We are very grateful that we do get paid insurance, very good one at that, but hubbies job is VERY demanding and NOT many people stay at his work.... so, the owners compensate, with little goodies, does the trick for us!!! (The owners' nice to boot!!!) Lot's of goodies at Christmas time, a picinic in the summer, etc. etc. can't complain toooooooooo much in that area. Weezie

With out knowing too much of the story for me, I personally think unions were awesome in the early days, and then some...... But in some instances, it's gone a bit too far, where the other people in the beginning ran the workers into the ground, the unions, are now doing that to the businesses. There's got to be some happy medium... If the businesses don't make some kind of money, they don't stay in business.... I've heard a joke, something about union workers, they can't pick up a pail of paint, if they are a steel worker, they have to wait for the painter to move it, could be days, etc. I'm sure it's not that outta whack, but ya wonder why alot of things cost so much for us to make and alot of business are going out of state/country to do the same job... Weezie I do worry about the people who don't have anything at all, for what ever the reason, I just hope everyone puts themselves in the other guys shoes.....a nice hot meal, means alot to some.... Oh, I am getting hungry just thinking about all that gravey and mashed potatoes and rolls, and peas and ................ could you imagine living in a card board box in weather like this...????
