how can I tell if my carrots are ready to eat without removing them from the ground? this is the kids' first crop and we are not sure.

The top of the root part should be an inch across or bigger. Pull one out and have a look. It'll taste good regardless. Baby carrots are yummo.

It's easy. Just brush the dirt from where the stem meets the ground and you can tell how big the carrot is.

I run my finger down the side just a little bit, about 1/2 inch. It is easy to tell that way.

When is a good time to plant my fall crop of carrots? I just "harvested" my itty-bitty carrots--at least my daughter's hamster enjoyed them. For some reason my carrots are always small here even though I have very sandy soil and they are in the ground much longer than they are supposed to be.
