Today I bouht a red delicious apple tree and a Tartan black cherry tree.

NOW I am reading that they need to be pollinated Duh however other sites call the cherry tree (this specific one) self pollinating  Duh so which is true????

I have a flowering crab apple growing in the front yard , so would that work as a pollinator for my red delicious??

What about the Black cherry?? Do I need another cherry tree?

Thanks! I'll check out the other thread.

My dh will not be to happy with me if I tell him that I now need to go back and buy 2 MORE trees LOL... where would I put them AND $$ LOL

Who knew gardening and birding could cost so much?? LOL! My dd is actually the one who picked out the tree's today.. "Look mommy we can SAVE money by planting FOOD trees! The we can just go to the back yard to get some food" LOL smart kid.

Hmmmmm how long will it take to actually get fruit from the tree's though????

Oh and we also planted 2 rasberry bushes and 1 black berry bush (plus some strawberry plants) that we put in LARGE pots so that they dont take over the whole yard.

Before you go buying any more trees, make sure to scout out your surroundings (neighbors). I noticed I had a neighbor with several apple trees, so I didn't bother going out to buy another tree.

How far away can they pollinate from? Does anyone know?

See if this article helps. Looks like 100 feet is the distance needed, and crabapple appears to be included in list of pollinators.

A tree that self pollinates will give you fruit but less than if you would have another pollinator. A flowering crabapple will pollinate an apple tree but only if they are in bloom around the same time. Most times there is a neighbour within distance that has trees which the bees tend to help you with.

I purchased a '5 in one' apple tree because it pollinates itself from the different apple branches. It is my third year after planting and I had a few apples last year on it already.

Another question about planting two cherry trees together? I wouldn't do it. There's not alot of room for your trees to breathe(as they say)also if one tree ends up diseased the other one ends up with it also.

Did you know that a sandcherry bush(cheap and pretty) can also pollinate your cherry trees? I just found that out last year and purchased one to go with my cherry tree in the backyard that never beared fruit. Guess what? I ended up with 3 cherries, hoping the tree takes full force this year. Good luck.

It had not occurred to me that sandcherry would also be a pollinator. Thanks for the tip. I also have a weeping cherry tree, and a chokecherry tree, are both of these pollinators also?

Yes, they are pollinators also. Do you know the variety of your flowering crab tree?

Hi - we planted several cherry trees last year. We ended up planting Bing to go along with the Tartarian. Actually, the other way around! but the nursery recommended the combination.
