It may be a Christmas cactus or a Thanksgiving cactus. They look similar, but the leaves of the Thanksgiving cactus have pointy ends sort of like a crab claw, whereas a Xmas cactus has smoother, more rounded leaves.

Happy late birthday, Francine! Mine is coming pretty soon. Christmas cactus are very nice and easy to plant. My sister combines pink, red and white in a same pot.

They are very easy to grow. They prefer sunlight and regular watering during the blooming period, less when not in bloom. Overwatering is a sure way to kill it. They prefer cool, dark conditions to set buds, so if you want lots of blooms next year, about 4 to 5 weeks before Thanksgiving put it in a cool dark place and water very little. In a few weeks you should start to see buds forming on the tips, and then you can bring it back out. You may not have to do all this to get it to bloom next year, but you will probably get more blooms if you do.
