In the LA Times today there is an article about the best smelling roses. Apparently they are starting to bring fragrance back to roses commerically grown. That pretty rose smell was kind of designed out when breeders wanted deeper colors and disease resistant flowers, but now they're encouraging it again! Here's the list from the American rose Society.

They say that one bloom from "Memorial Day" is able to perfume an entire room. I think I'm going to look for that one for my yard!

I love roses - have been constantly searching for some hardy types up here in Alberta Canada that have that wonderful fragrance (so far not too much luck). It seems that you either have to sacrifice the shape of the flower (for hardiness), or if you want smell, you won't have alot of luck getting them to grow up here.
Any ideas for a wishful thinker?

Hi Jake, glad to see you again! In another post on names of roses Tamara asked the same question about hardy roses for Canada. There is a Canadian rose Society, maybe they can help you out. I put a link on that other thread... check it out. (I don't know how to do the cool connecting this post to that one thing or I would...)

Gardengal....what a koike dink...I just moved 5 rose bushes yesterday and found the tag on one of them....it was the just joey.

2 of 15 had tags :rolleyes:

The just joey HT has a rather big bloom and kind of a peachy color.....(not my color preference for roses) but the smellllllll..... oooooh it is heavenly!!!! How do I make a potporri (sp?) out of them????

What I've done is just hang the roses up to dry in a closet somewhere then when dry, pop the petals in a bowl. I'm sure there is probably a bunch of ways to do it and I might be missing something that makes them stay smelling sweet.

I took the roses from my grandma's funeral and dried them. I put the petals in a little vase. Even though they aren't very fragrant they stayed a beautiful dark red and its just a little reminder of her (red roses were her favorites). And they have lasted almost 9 years (gosh, I can't believe its been so long) and still look good.

Oohhhhh!!!! An angel face followed me home a few days ago!

With so many bare root roses starting to pop up in the stores something like this is nice to know what you might be getting. I was so glad it was in the paper today. I made a copy for my rose file.

It has given me some very good possibilities for my area. (Can you believe it has been minus 35 Celcius here the last week or so?)
Anyway - thanks - I'm looking forward to spring and trying some of these varieties!
