I have a ten year old wisteria vine that has never bloomed, and I've tried pruning at different times of the year, fertilizing, root pruning, severe pruning and transplanting. It may just be a dud. I transplanted it to another spot in my yard a couple of years ago. Every spring I look at the spurs hopefully. This year, I don't know whether I'm seeing something new or whether my hope simply knows no bounds, but I'm seeing some furry golden buds among the pointy leaf ones. I found this nice photo of wisteria buds about to bloom: http://oregonstate.edu/dept/ldplants/wisi5.htm , but what do they look like before they get to that point?

Those ARE Wisteria buds. Hopefully you won't have any frost. They are very sensitive to the cold. My Daughter's vine was full of buds, but only a few survived the cold snap we had. They thrive in the sun and I've heard they do not like much fertilizer. You will get a lot of green and very few flowers. Enjoy them.

I have grown 2 wisterias one at my old place and the one here. I have had this latest one for over 15 years. It blooms profusely in the spring and then all summer. Sometimes the spring blooms are nipped by a late frost. The more you trim it the more it will bloom. Mine is in a sunny and sort of dry spot. I have never fed it. The blooms of the wisteria open even larger and can reach 10-12 inches long.

Omigosh, I think I'm gonna faint! I only have a few of the little furries, but if I hear of a cold snap, I'm going out there and put a baggie over each one! If I really get flowers after all this time, I'll try to post a photo here. P.S. Weezie- thanks for repairing my link. <img border="0" alt="[perplexed]" title="" src="graemlins/confused.gif" />

Is it true that Wisteria doesn't bloom for many years after you plant it?? I really, really, want one but don't know if I'll be in this house long enough to see it bloom. Does anyone know?

Honeysuckle? I have Lonicera Heckrotti and I just love the yellow/pink flowers - reminds me of grapefruit colors! It smells heavenly on cloudy days, or early morning/evening and the hummingbirds love it too!

Hyacinth Beans!!! I know some one who grows them (*Renee) and I've seen a picture of her arbor and they were BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She said they grow pretty big and/or fast... I've heard you can "whack" your plants a few times, and they are supposed to feel "threatened" and produce a flower or produce??? Never had to spank my plants before but hey, worth a try??? Weezie

Hey Storm, how about morning glories and moonflowers? They're annuals and will bloom for a long time.
Weez- my wisteria is ten years old and I was sure it was a dud. That's why I'm so excited and protective about these first four buds. I've wadded them up in saran wrap. I hope that'll protect them from the cold snap.
My redbuds are all set to pop, too. Not much I can do to protect them. I cut some branches for indoor blooming. They look very Japanese-y Ikebana-ing here and there in the house.
The cold snap is to continuee through Tuesday, blast it!

I can second the purple hyacinth beans, Weezie! I've been growing them on an arbor for the past 3 years - as you said, they do grow fast, and a bonus is that hummingbirds love the flowers!

Thanks for helping with that photo post, and for the compliments.
I wound up with five foot-long racimes. They are beginning to fade at the tops, now.
The other photos are of my garden last year, suffering through the recent drought and house addition construction. Then I put one in of the perrenial bed rennovations last month, the wisteria, and the tulips from the cheap Walmart bulbs I put in last fall.
