I been out playing in the dirt today.I decided to go on and pry my mums out of their concrete home.was a huge mass of curling roots.divided it up with shovel.lo and behold I found my golf dude marker.I haven't seen him in 2 years I bet.I can also tell you what 2 plants was in that container in Indy now cause I found the markers in the roots when was shakeing the soil out.purple wave petunias&pure white cascadeing petunias that were not pure white.They had purple centers.I'll have to go check out

cause I did like those petunias,they did real well up there in ice cold indpls..

so how many of ya find "lost objects"in plants when moveing or divideing?

I haven't found anything that *I* lost, but I had a little mystery that was very perplexing last spring/summer.

With all of the ripping out and digging I've had to do to get my garden ready for THIS spring I kept stumbling upon silverware! And dishes!

At first I thought someone must have been gardening with utensils!! But there were so many that I couldn't believe it! And, they were not antiques or anything from the 1700's house next door to my cape.

In the existing garden for vegetables,
upon rototilling and then digging holes
for the plants, I came acrossed coal,
doorknobs, glass, tin cans, more coal,
I can't even remember some of the stuff,
but you might imagine, it was next to
their old garbage dump area I guess..

I found 3 neat old clay marbles in the flower bed of our first house.

I can't even see the garden under that 4 feet of snow!

I have found lots of different things in the gardens over the years. Lots of lost toys...cars and little plastic soldiers. But more recently I have been finding painted stones.....ladybugs and other sorts. I gotta laugh when I see these. My middle son loves to paint...and draw...and sculpt....he would find these stones...and bring them in the house...paint them and put them back out in the garden. I love em!

Tht flower fields ARE open to the public....just not that particular show. The ranunculus (spelling) are beautiful...planted in big bands of color you can see from the freeway. They do little tours and have a gift shop, etc... They open March 14.

Barb H.....first thing that popped into my head was some teen didn't want to do the dishes and decided it was easier to bury them!!!! Sometimes that doesn't seem like a bad idea!!!LOL

my neighbor tore down his old porch.he found dishes under it and pans& silverware.His girls were hideing the dishes so they wouldn't have to wash them.
When in Indpls was a small plot of dirt beside the coal shoot& I found a childs silver cup& spoon& fork were silver& a small serveing saucer.I still have the saucer& cup.gave the spoon& fork to 1st grandson as baby gift.a few varouis marbles(not the real small ones the gumball sized ones)

my soil don't freeze and don't really get snow in my southern part of TX.I'm sick today from working outdoors yesterday.Will teach me to wear a sweatshirt& leave it on.or may have been the waterhose fight we had.

Barb, I used to find broken dishes and such in the garden of a house that we lived in when we lived in the city. Turns out that the people who used to live around here didn't feel like having to haul stuff like that to the dump before we had trash collection...maybe about 60 years ago or so.

The weirdest thing we ever found was a bathtub!!! The previous owners of the same city house didn't want to pay extra to haul it away when they got a new tub, so they just burried it!!! I've also found marbles of all sizes, coins, silverware, small toys (none that were mine when I was younger! ) and some pretty interesting stones. I can't wait to get into this new garden this spring!!!

OK...but you-all don't know the conclusion of the story.......HERE GOES!

The gentleman that lived there previously was an Orthodox Jewish gentleman. My neighbors told me that they would see him outside burrying stuff and when they asked him about it he said that since he was Kosher, anything unKosher on a dish, the dish/silverware would either have to be thrown away, or burried for three days so that he could use it again.

So that was the mystery of the silverware! And here I thought that treasure was buried all over! The neighbors told me that he was elderly and got forgetful where he burried things. Interesting!

OMG....that's too funny. I can almost picture him out there in the dark...digging holes....hehehehe....

I thought it was so interesting as he was married to a Catholic who kept a kosher house for him.
Apparently, he was well beloved in the neighborhood especially as he aged...a real gentleman.

However it was kinda funny digging stuff up and being VERY perplexed before we figured it out!!

I DO like that story. Actually....I passed it on to the girls at work last night. They got a kick out of it as well. Just goes to show you.....always something new to learn!

I can't wait until I really start digging around this spring! I was basically doing a clean up last spring and summer, so now that I'm really going to dig who knows what I might find?

(she says hoping it will be silver, gold, etc!)

Oh! And last spring, my biggest surprise was that I found an old hibachhi burried in the dirt...and after tearing tons of ivy found an outdoor fireplace/BBQ....hiding under all that greenery built into the stone wall.
