I planted hostas last year. It is April 2nd and I am wondering when I will ever see them again.

Where have all my hosta's gone?? (Isn't there a song like that?? hehe

Do you still have snow???
Are they planted in an area that would be shadey?
And what zone are you???

Mine are just barely peaking out, the very tips...
If you are a zone colder than me, *I'm a 5*, that may be a factor.
If you have them in an area that is shaded, it will remain cooler and the plant will still be believing that it's winter.... so, it might be still sleeping.??

Some of those may be factor's.....

Also, If it didn't survive (*I'd give it time though*) how deep did you plant the plant originally?
Too deep maybe a factor or not deep enough..

Hi Weezie....Thanks for the info.

I planted 5 different ones last year. I tried not to plant them too deep and I mounded them for the roots to lay over. They are in the shade so maybe they are still sleeping.

We are on the very West Coast. We only had one snow fall all winter. I think I am a zone 9. Eight or nine anyway.

I guess I will have to wait and just be patient. I am never patient in the spring.

I'm in zone 8b/9a and my hostas are just starting to poke up their pretty little heads. They are planted in the shadiest spot under my maple tree. We didn't have any snowfall just a couple good frosts, so I have a feeling you might be a zone 7 or 8(it all depends on your min. temp). Hopefully you will see them soon. I thought mine were goners since some certain snails and slugs thought that area was their own salad bar last summer, but lo and behold they're back! Now to keep the snails and slugs away, that's a different story. Good luck!

Still no sign of them. I can't believe I would loose all 5 of them. I have hope.

storm, don't give up yet. i'm in southeast georgia and i am just now seeing some of my plants. this screwy weather (warm one minute and freezing the next )

Don't forget that there is different variety's of Hosta's too...
I have 5 total...
2 huge I'd say common ones, with purple flowers...
2 miniature one's with purple flowers *they're so sweet)
1 medium with white flower and FRAGRANT!!!

The one's that I saw poking up where my huge monster... I have one in one place and another in the back next to the white one....
None of the mini's are showing anything, the white one is doing nothing and the purple one in the back is doing nothing...
The only one that is peaking out, is the monster up by the house, and you've got to remember micro climates... I am a zone 5/ maybe 6... But I have several microclimates closer to my house....So, hence that may be why the one is just peaking and all the other's aren't!!!

Do NOT DISPAIR!!
Alot of plants take time to wake up in the spring.
And if you realize this it is ONLY the first week of April!!!! Keep the faith...
They should come up still!!!

I will keep the faith. Gardens surprise me every year.

I saw on TV someone planting hostas and they said to create a small mount of earth and lay the roots over gently. Then fill in the whole. So that's what I did. I kinda built a hump in the hole for them to sit on.

Okay Storm, I see what you mean now!!!
Like planting roses...
Dig a hole, put dirt back in and mound up
in the middle, place rose on top, spread
out roots, back fill in!! Gotchya!

I was thinking something else in my head,
I was thinking you pulled them out of the
ground, layed them sideways and mounded
dirt over them....

They do over winter some roses that way,
I believe the tree ones, for way up North???
Not sure.....Don't quote me!!

I'm sure I have the names somewhere Wheezie but can't lay my hands on them at the moment. They are pretty run of the mill though.

Two are big ones and I believe 3 are small. I remember my favourite has a leaf that is more blueish than green. A greeny blue. Solid color with veins. I have a couple of varigated ones and I can't remember the other two. I just know I love them all and was really looking forward to see them grow bigger this year. We have a wooded area behind our fence and I figured my garden would be a natural for them. I will continue to watch for them.

Hostas report from southeast Kentucky!

I'm rootin' for 'em Storm!!
I took a quick peak at mine today,
while pullin' leaves out of the beds.
And I saw some comin' out, on my mom's side!

Hers are the white and green ones, with
the purple flowers!!!

But I haven't seen my really fragrant white
one's yet.. They usually poke their heads up way
later..

And neither have my mini's either!

Aaaaaack - my hostas flourished this weekend with the beautiful weather and are up 6-8 inches already! I have the same green and white, Weezie, and was hoping to divide them this year before they leafed out! :p

In the 10 years we've been here, I've only seen the flowers twice thanks to the deer... I've been slowly getting rid of the plants - they take up too much space and are getting waaaaaay toooooo huge for the spots they are in.

I have one, I call the monster,
he's over shadowing my St. John's Wort,
Hyacyniths, some Star Gazer Lilies, Jonquils,
and some pincushions' I have and I had a path
on the other side of him I could walk on but
that has been gone for about 5 years now!!!
The mini's are so cute.!!!
I LOVE the Lungworts (pulminaria's) too, very nice, great foliage and not so brute~ish!!

My sister and I went to this great hosta place last year and we each got 6 different kinds so that we can wait a couple of years for them to get established and then devide them so we'll each have 12 different kinds. The only problem is for the life of me I can't remember the names of any of them. I seem to have that problem with alot of the things I planted in the fall, when it starts coming up in the spring I have no idea what it is. How do you guys keep track?

Jenni-I have a recipe box that I have for my landscaping. I staple on the tag that comes with the plant, write where and when I planted it and any other info that I think I will need in the future. Works great (specially if I could remember every time!)
