I have this idea for a firefighters' garden, using tools that firefighters use, and only white, yellow, orange, red, and black flowering plants...

Now I need some ideas! Renee has given me several good ideas, like creating a 'fence' out of fire hose, and then planting climbing vines to grow on it...

Also, does anyone have experiences with growing morning glories on trees? I would like to try the 'scarlett o'hara' morning glory on a pine tree or ten

i have a burning bush that is absolutly beautiful in the fall it turns a brilliant red with little red berries on it. i think morning glories will grow anywhere there is sun.

I grow some morning glory on a cedar tree.the bark has some peeling at spots and I tuck a vine bit in that and give it some help.and have some doing the same on an oak tree.you just have to help it out and it will be thicker towards the bottom
I've watched a "ground force"show wher they re did a spot for firefighters& used some hose& even used an old non working hydrant.they used as a water feature.she ran the water line inside the hose that was used on firetrucks.they salvaged a ladder from a junk yard and grew vines on they had a pair of fireman boots and grew some plants inside and had used old hats as flower pots but had plants in a planter and set in theses hats and was a hole in bottom for drainage.they probly found at salvation army type stores.you could always use the hose to outline a flowerbed& i'd look for a dalmation statue to set it off& is always those kids water sprinkler firehydrant....could be 2 features...deco& waterer

I was in a black flower trade once...was a gothic trade theme.was black panseys with orange specks,black Hollyhock,black iris are black tulips& is a red rose that is very dark in color almost black,black salvia....some blacks are actually purple but is a dark purple purple petunia is sometimes called black

Okay, now I am starting to plan this garden out in detail...I saw the roses are out in the stores around here, and could use some opinions!

I would use a combo of colors but maybe do a red stripe, an orange, then yellow kind of like a flame. Do you guys have Armstrong Garden Centers up there? They had a rose called Disneyland that was a pretty coppery orange. That would look really good. I'm sure there are others that are similar color. I noticed Wal-Mart has bare root roses in stock. I've had good luck so far with bare root, and they're so much cheaper.

Jackson Perkins roses are the best. Absolutely beautiful. Costco had some of their bare root roses this weekend, good prices too. Its that time of year again!

I know wal-mart has their bare-roots out...an 'angel face' followed be home, and inspired this question!

I'll bet if you used an old ladder planted with vines that the birds would love it. Food, nectar, and a place to stand or sit while they eat.

Aren't there pansies that are black and white faced? That would look so cute.

barleychown, have you done any more planning? What colors did you decide on. There are black pansies, but they don't stay pretty long in the south. Not sure how long they'd last where you are.

I was at my nieces wedding over the weekend. She married a soldier boy and her colors were red, white, and blue. I thought that would make a pretty section in a flower garden.

BC, have you thought anymore about your firefighters garden? The weather probably isn't right where you are, but it's perfect here for planting.

The plans have changed dramatically with the change of houses...at this new house, the whole back yard is going to be the firefighter's garden! I am currently looking for two old wooden ladders, to make them into a sort of arch by the gate....wish me luck on that!

Also, in this yard, I found out today that the huge Rhodie by the house has BRIGHT red blooms! Whoo Hooo!!! I couldn't have planned that better myself!

I managed to talk the department into giving me two pairs of their old turn-out boots, now I need suggestions on plants to plant in them, in the color scheme, maybe some that trail??? (the boots are black with yellow bands...if that helps)....

Barley, did I ever send you the seeds form those plumey fuzzy flowers I have? pink, red, white. Those definateley look like flames, I'll go post one on my webshots page. you can goto landscape trials ......and the topic that starts with TEST has a link to my page, it's not the first2-3 links ( because I don't know what I'm doin, had to bring in an expect!) That way you can look at them.

How about red impatients? I don't know if that was mentioned already. I kind of read all of the messages, but I read them quickly. There are elephant ears that are black....and I have these awesome tulips that come up that are red and yellow. They look like they are on fire. Did you think maybe to have bright blue covering plants to come out of the hose? You could make it look like the hose is on the ground and the water is flowing across the garden. Just an idea.
