seed Starting Soil Mix???

What do you put in to make a "seed~friendly"
Potting soil??

I see they sell that, and it's different to
regular potting soil??
What's the difference???

Would it be regular potting soil, vermiculite, perlite, ???? Anything else?????

The commercial seed starting mixes that I used to purchase contained mostly peat. There was a bit of perlite & vermiculite too, but to be honest I don't think they have soil in them. I found it was much cheaper to make my own though.

My recipe for seed starter mix:

40% peat
10% compost
15% vermiculite
15% perlite
20% sterilized soil (oven bake outdoor dirt for 10 minutes @ 400 degrees)

This stuff works like a charm for me:)

I just use old, sifted compost for both seedling flats and potting soil. For some seeds, I'll add a little sand to lighten it. The compost I use doesn't have manure added. It's just leaves, garden debris, and kitchen refuse, about a year old.
