I'm trying to decide what kind of plant to hang in one of my kitchen windows. It has to like direct sunlight and not be a very large plant. I was going to go with ivy, but I have so much of it already, I'd like something different. Any suggestions? I've already got my bracket up and ready to go, now I just need the plant!

Do you know about how many hours it would get of direct sunlight? I have several types of plants in a very sunny window, but they only get between 2-3 hours of direct light a day... gab

I'll answer for Sherri, it's a South window that I think would get about 5 or 6 hours of full sun!
I think a succulent would be nice there Sherri!
a String of hearts or a burrows tail or a string or beads... They won't grow too fast and they don't take up too much space, which you don't have too much of right there!

I found this little blurb in my notes, sounds promising... Duh

"Chenile plant (Acalypha hispida) produces fuzzy, long, red, cat tail-like blooms that dangle from the ends of the branches. It grows best in bright light and high humidity - great for sunny kitchen window."

Barley, what a cute plant! I don't know what kind of luck I'll have finding one around here, but maybe I can find the seeds in a cataloge or something. Thank you for the ideas everyone!

Hi Sherri,

Here are some possibilities:

Lipstick plant (Aescynanthus)
Asparagus fern
Goldfish plant (Columnea)
Wax plant (Hoya carnosa)
Purple heart (Setcreasea)
Rosary vine (Ceropegia woodii)
Spider plant
Strawberry geranium (Saxifraga stolonifera)
Tahitian bridal veil (Gibasis geniculata)
Velvet plant (Gynura scandens)
Wandering Jew (Zebrina pendula and Tradescantia albiflora)

All of these do well hanging in a window with about 6 hours of direct sun.

Barley,
This isn't park of your inital post,
but on the Parks site you posted,
if you go to the bottom left hand corner,
it has seed tapes, mats and circles!!
Those can be alot of fun for first time gardeners.
Or children or really older folks who have mobile issues!!!!!!

I started with those types and they were so much fun...
And those prices there weren't too bad, I've
seen them alot more.... And if you clicked on it
it had several varieties for all 3 catagories!

Thanks Barley!!

Catlover - I can't begin to count how many times I have caught Odelle standing on her back legs on the NARROW windowsil...front legs stretched over her head, paws wrapped around a spider plant leaf or baby, trying to pull it to her mouth! :p Brat!

Weezie - those things are so cool!!! I had several types of them last year...they did really well!
