Starting an EBusiness

I think you need to get a license from your local county and a taxpayer id from your sate.

I want to start a business selling baby blankets. I make alot of them for my kids at school. They get one when they turn 2 and move up to the next room (i don't do potty training!). Everyone always asks how much it would cost for me to make one for someone else and I've done a few special order ones. So, that's what I want to do.

spring Feaver, I actually was looking at IRS's website lastnight and read through alot of what they have. Apparently I don't need an EIN because I would have sole-proprietorship and wouldn't have any workers......although I ahven't gotten to read through everything yet. Thanks tho....its a GREAT site!

I do know that I'l need some sort of tax payer ID....I'm not sure yet on how to do that or anything. I'll be reading up on this stuff when I get back to work in 15 minutes....I'm on my lunch break! smile

There's an excellent group of retired business men and women called SCORE, you can get free counseling and they have some low cost seminars also. And they have a website with oodles of info and newsletters . You should have a local chapter where you are.

You don't need an EIN unless you have employees. (You don't count... you will be a slave!)

In Washington you go to a Dept of Revenue office, fill out the forms and they take care of all necessary and will even trademark your name (The Garden Helper (tm)) In some cases, you will need "special" licenses (i.e) I had to get my "Nurserymans" License for the state (required yearly inspections) and a "flower Venders" license to sell plants in Seattle.

I looked a bit at ebay businesses, but I'm not sure if that is something that I want to do....maybe as part of my business. You have to pay the appropriate license and registration fees, but as I recall, I walked out with licenses and a registered TM for under $50 for TGH... when I sold plants (Cedar Hill Ferns, in Seattle), it was $75 more.
If you are serious about starting a business think about your 3 favorite things to do in life and figure out how you can get paid to do them.... (TGH was a fluke... I didn't want to be and I don't want to be in business again... but you guys made me! ) kissies

What is your new domain name? (whisper it to me... I won't tell!)

Now that you have a domain name, you need to get a web up. Building it yourself initially will cost a lost less money and there are lots of progrmas out there that can assist with that. I like Front page a lot and it does some very nice looking business type webs. Very easy to use as well.

If you need pointers in that, let me know and I will be glad to help there.

I didn't get webhosting on the domain yet...mostly because I want to get an idea of what I want first. I have done some web building with HTML before and my hubby went to school for web building. smile But thanks for the offer...if there is something we need help on, I'll let you know!

One word of advise on Domain names, you might want to register the .com, .net, and .org, versions of the Domain, there are people out just looking for sites like that.

It is down now, I think, but, whitehouse.com was a porn site, and whitehouse.gov was the Whitehouse in D.C,.

People are so used to typing .com, they didn't think about it. There was at one time a porn site very close to a NASA site.

I tend to stay away from Graphical HTML editors, (I use Bluefish,) they tend to leave a lot of extra code in the pages. Also Frontpage writes pages designed for Internet Explorer.

Not everybody uses IE, I use Opera, and Mozilla.

My husband also uses Mozilla. I, personally, use IE just because I'm used to it and like to be set in my ways. smile

Bill gave me information on going to the Dept. of Revenue for the state....so I went to their site online and was able to do an online interview for my business and register with the state via the internet. all I have to do is send in a paper with my signature and a check for the fee to register a fictitious name (only $70 for PA). They would have let me do the payment online, but I didn't want to use the debit card for this. I'll just send a check with my signature.

I'm REALLY getting excited about this. Tomorrow I will look into business accounts at some local banks to get an idea on what places offer and I will also look at costs for bolts of fabric so that I know what to expect.

Did not think about that at all Pat. Will have to look into other web browsers and see how my stuff looks viewed through them.

Very exciting Jenn! Good luck!!!

Anybody that knows me, knows that I don't like anything Microsoft.

Let me show what I mean.

Go to this URL:

web page

View the Source of the page.

At the top of the page you see this:

Code
 <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/
xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en">
<head>
<title></title>
<xxxx name="generator" content="Bluefish"/>

This page is one that I wrote, the DOCTYPE says this page is XHTML 1.0 Transitional

I verified the code to be XHTML 1.0 Transitional

Also the line that says <xxxx name="generator" content="Bluefish"/>

Bluefish is the program I used to write the page.

Next using IE go to File > Save As and save the file in My Documents.

Now go to My Documents and open the file and view the source of the page.

You will see this:

Code
 <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">
<!-- saved from url=(0053)http://firewalladdons.sourceforge.net/squidguard.html -->
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><HTML lang=en xml:lang="en"
xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><HEAD><TITLE></TITLE>
<XXXX content="MSHTML 6.00.2800.1529" name=GENERATOR>

Notice that the file has been converted from XHTML 1.0 Transitional to HTML 4.0 Transitional you can see
all the tags are in uppercase instead of lowercase.

Also notice that Generator tag has been changed from Bluefish to MSHTML 6.00.2800.1529,
and all you did was save the file. IE changed this for no reason it displays just fine.
There may be some others changes that are Microsoft only tags.

This is why I caution webwriters to beware of using Microsoft tools to write Webpages.
Not everybody uses IE.
