Our little craft group got together today to decorate a clay pot. The project was called "Greenman". We used a special clay & mold to create an elf-like face on the front of a clay pot. Then we used real leaves, face down, to leave impressions on green clay, and created the leaves. After baking in an oven for half an hour (and having a great lunch!) we returned to paint a wash of different colors on different parts of our clay creations. It was a fun afternoon.

that's so cool! bet they'd make great house plant pots! BUt will the paint dissolve (hope that doesn't sound too stupid, I was never friends with paint...still remember how we were blowing paint spiders in JK and I sucked in paint from the straw instead of blowing it )?

That's exactly what we did! It was a glossy coat over the clay that looks nice. Glad you girls enjoyed the pics.

That is a great project. What kind of clay and paints did you use? I think that would be a perfect Christmas Project for my kids to give to their Grandmothers and Aunts!

We started with inexpensive clay pots.

We used a polymer clay, amber seed beads for the eyes, white beads for the mouth. We had a "face mold" for the elf. We used real leaves to push into the green clay to get the veins from the leaves onto our clay. We had some brass charms we pushed into the clay to get impressions of a dragonfly and bee. Then the pot is baked in a 265 degree oven for 30 minutes (per the manufacturers directions on the polymer clay package). We used acrylic paints mixed with water to wash onto the clay shapes to build up the color.

I'm guessing any craft store would have the materials (polymer clay, face mold, a couple of brass charms for impressions and a couple of acrylic paints). It was a fun project!

Thanks, I just saved all this so I can put it on the shopping list next time I hit the craft store. The kids are really going to enjoy making the pots, though I am sure we will get more than cute faces.
