does this seem like a stupid idea? I lost my creadit card. I signed in to my account online, and clicked on "order a replacement card". A message came up that said, "In order to do this, you'll need to call the number on the back of your card".

Hmmmm...

If I HAD the card to get a phone number off the BACK of it, I wouldn't NEED a REPLACEMENT CARD, NOW WOULD I?!?!?!

GAH!

I get my statements online. I don't save my paper statements anyway (I once read a quote that said, "save your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements).

Even still, I was annoyed to begin with because I can't find my card and am looking forward to the salvation of being one click away and BAM! Stupid statement hits me right between the eyes.

There are different actions taken for replacement cards and lost or stolen cards-- for your protection and the company's protection-- that is why you have to call-- (i.e. if you need a replacement card it could be due to the magnetic strip being damaged, etc. in that instance you would still have the card)-- if it is lost you need to tell them so that they can take precautions against situations if someone else should come across the card--there should be #'s on the acounts page of your card's website for this...
(just speaking from experience...)
