lillies are extremely poisonous to cats!!!!
Tina alerted me to the danger of lillies to cats...she says that if they get the pollen on them, then lick it off, it can kill them. Certainly eating even very small amounts can be fatal if treatment is not begun immediately.
I originally posted this in plants and flowers, but I thought it was important enough to get the word out...

"I found this information with Google...lillies are terrifically poisonous to cats, particularly the leaves. I have 6 stella d'oro daylillies I recently potted on our porch, where our cats like to hang out...the leaves extend above the soil. I have to figure out how to make them secure from the cats now. I also have lillies in the house, valentines flowers I bought yesterday for my wife.

I know all this is upsetting to a lot of you...I love lillies, and now I have to figure out if I'm ever going to mess with them anymore. I WON'T give up my cats.

Oh WOW! Are they very poisonous to mostly cats or are they poisonous in general?

Becky, they mostly only affect cats. Cats have very different metabolisms from dogs and humans.
We have daylillies and an asian lillie, daylillies EVERYWHERE around our place, I guess maybe we've just been real lucky. I don't know what to do.

Dave thanks for this while I don't have cats my neighbor does and also they have a lot of lilies while I have a few. Have to agree if they are poisonous to cats probably are to others also including dogs. If I had cats I wouldn't give them up just keep them away from the lilies. I will be getting rid of mine.

I need to work on my spelling. It's lily and LILIES. Even if it doesn't look right.

Now does this include lillies of the valley? I don't have any right now, but someday would love to. I will also have cats as long as I live, so...

I use the spellcheck that way I can blame it for any mizpelling

Jimmy...they have almost no affect on dogs at any dose.
I can't really just get rid of mine, they're everywhere. They've naturalized all around the farm, and we've moved them to lots of places.
We've never had a cat poisoned yet, but I have to do some serious thinking about this.

I'd have to look that up, Becky. I don't think they're in the same family, but I seem to recall that they're somewhat poisonous. So are lots of plants, but the daylillies, easter lillies and others are VERY poisonous.

Wow...now I am worried about the few lilies I have, I have way too many cats to risk the chance of one of them being harmed. Are cats attracted to these I wonder??? Thanks for bring this to our attention Dave!!!

I have an outdoor cat, 11 years old and I also have lilies. He doesn't appear to be interested in them at all. I had the lilies and cat before I learned about the dangers or I might have thought differently about the lilies I planted.

My mother had lilies and we always had cats and none ever died mysteriously????? Probably the cats don't even mess with lilies. I would move the ones that are on/near the porch they hang out , but I wouldn't necessarily worry about ones out in the yard.

and get rid of the indoor lilies also

You CAN enjoy lilies indoors without endangering your cats!!! The past few years, I have simply cut off the stamens on the lilies before bringing them indoors - I did this because they pollen was making a terrible mess of things, even staining some things permanently.

The cut flowers last just as long as the ones left alone. I haven't tried this on my outside lilies, because the feral cats who hang around have never seemed to have a problem with them.

Lynne...it's not just the pollen. ALL parts of a lily are DEADLY! If a cat so much as chews on a leaf or petal, it will go into kidney failure.

I guess my cats aren't interested in THOSE plants, so I'm lucky about that. Of course there are other plants that they just will not leave alone!
