My Dad was among the 30,000 5th Marine Division soldiers who invaded Iwo Jima on Feb 19, 1945 (61 years ago), and among the 10% who survived that battle & returned home.
When we were kids, he told us that he was
"one of the men who guarded the men, who guarded the men, who guarded the men, who guarded the men who put up the flag", when Joe Rosenthal took that famous pic on Mount Suribachi on 2/23/45.
I was just a "twinkle in his eye" at the time... born 9 months after he came home,
therefor making ME "Post-war surplus"!!! I have since inherited the scrapbook that my Mother compiled while he was in the Marines (Complete with a Rosenthal photo of the flag raising & the accompanying letter of gratitude, which he received from the War Department), & am the owner of the 3-corner flag from his casket, from when we said our good-bye's to him a few years ago. I'm very proud to have these mementos, & will always be proud of him, the U.S. Marines and all who are dedicated to the preservation of our freedom.
Thanx for the post, Franny.
