I'm taking the rest of the week off (5 days off in a row counting Mon. and Tues. my normal days off). I'm going to spend a couple of nights in Sandbridge Beach with an old college buddy and his family. I'm planning on going to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens Sunday morning before I start the trip back. They're calling for lot's of sun, so it should be a great day for it. Now, I just need to get a new battery for my camera and some film.

Hope you have fun. I, personally, do not like the beach.....even though we go with Stephen's family almost every year.

Terry! If you happen to cruise down Ocean View Blvd. in Norfolk blow your horn when you pass the Picadilly Inn Bar and Grill for me! It's right in front of where the amusement park used to be. Have a good time! Cindy

Cindy, funny you should mention the amusement park. I just learned about it on Saturday. I was in the geneology room at the library in Norfolk and overheard Robert Hitchings, the Norfolk City Historian, speak of it.
When my dad was 8 years old, he lived on Virgilina Ave. just 2 blocks south of Ocean View and a half mile east of where the amusement park was.
I was planning on driving up there to see if the house he lived in was still standing, but forgot to take the address with me.
Jamie, there's no hotels on Sandbridge Beach that I know of, but there are some condos and a whole bunch of beach houses! The one we stayed at for free cost $3000 or more for a week in the summer! This might have been the last time in that beach house as they are trying to sell it. They're asking 1.5 million and the last offer I heard was 1.25.
Francine, is the marina close to the Waterside Marketplace? I was down there maybe 5 years ago for lunch at the Rainforest Cafe in the MacArthur Center (now out of business) and then a harbor tour on the American Rover, a 3-masted schooner.
Weezie and Becky, I took a bunch of pictures (almost 2 whole rolls of film) while at the gardens. (36 exposures each) I spent about 4 hours in the gardens, then ate lunch at the cafe before starting for home. They had a special today. A bowl of chile over cornbread--it was awesome!
This was the first time I'd ever gone there alone. It was nice not feeling I had to rush through it, being with people who weren't into it as much as I was.

When my dad was 8 years old, he lived on Virgilina Ave. just 2 blocks south of Ocean View and a half mile east of where the amusement park was. Wow....small world, Terry! That was right in my old neighborhood. I lived on Gilpin Avenue. We moved from there when I was 10, back to Kentucky. 25 years later when I was on my way to Delaware I detoured through Ocean View, even went to see the house we had owned. Everything was just like it had been 25 years earlier. I was so amazed. I had gone back only once before that, when I was 16. (...that's when I discovered the Picadilly Bar!) Can't wait to see some pics of your trip! Did you happen to go to Azalea Gardens when you were there?

Cindy, I skirted that area. I only saw a couple of azaleas/rhododendrons with blossoms on. It was too early for them. I did get a picture of the very earliest one. It was approaching full bloom.
