You may not have them. They prefer mature, old-growth forests in BIG tracts to stay in.

We have 7 acres with lots of very old oaks and 15 pecan trees. The trees are not real close together, like a forest, but there are a lot of them. Should I look?

By all means have a look! They are almost always seen in pairs. Listen for the very nasal, "Yank! Yank!" call that they give constantly as they feed.

My Neighbor has 100 acres..Part of it is wooded. And There is a large wooded area across the street from my house. I think the WoodPeckers are coming from the woods that is on the 100 acres my neighbor has. Although I have quite a few mature trees on my property...I wouldn't consider it dense woods..
