You're in a growing area that there's really no freezes, or snow or frosts..
*or hard frosts I should say*
and you can grow plants that may come from the tropics area...
and a constant growing season...
*as opposed to like a growing zone 5, that would have a winter, snow and hard killing frost to most tender plants*

Thanks Rosie, Duh but I'm a little confused now; actually, maybe a lot confused. confused It shows St. Louis, MO as being in zone 6a and I'm just across the river, about 10 miles east of St. Louis, and I've always been told that we were in zone 5! Duh We always get exactly what they get weatherwise!

Patti, I don't even pay any attention to the zones any more...we were considered 6b now it's 7a. I have perennials growing in south facing beds next to the house that are for z8 - z10 and they do wonderfully here. I know I can't overwinter the "real" tropical plants outside but I can get by with the hardier "tender perennials" that are usually treated as annuals. wink

Rosie, I know what you mean because I've had some perennials that have survived which shouldn't, frown but that's because I forgot to dig them up in the fall. eek It's just that I don't want to spend big bucks on a plant that's not deemed hardy for this area and lose it, ters so I try to stick with the tried and true! wink I lose enough plants through other means without trying to experiment with an expensive plant! frown

Patti, try this zonal map by using your zip code and see what shows up...
http://www.garden.org/zipzone/

I don't experiment with any expensive plants. Maybe that's because I don't buy the big bucks items. My gardening budget is so limited, if it "ain't on sale, it ain't in my cart." laugh

Thanks so much for the link, Rosie! Duh I guess it's a good thing the planting season is almost over when I found this out because I'm out of plant money for this season frown ; BUT, oh boy, just wait until next spring! smile
