My mom crocheted me a wonderful pink afghan way back when I was going off to college. My daughter really liked it, and wanted to take it from me - I still use it!!!

So, my mom said she would make a new one for her, but this time she would knit one. Well... one of the things my daughter really likes about mine is the "popcorn" areas, and we can't find a knitted stitch that looks like it. My mom started Amy's afghan twice already, but is having so much trouble with her hands shaking, she has passed it on to me to make. So far, I have completed 1 and 1/2 of the side panels - very easy - boxes made of 6 stitches knit, then 6 stitches pearl, 1 inch squares.

Mom was going to do a mulitple cable pattern for the center panel, but cannot with her shakey hands. I do not have the patience to knit cables for 72 inches long. So... the question is... is there a stitch that looks like the crocheted "popcorn"? Or, can you suggest another interesting design for the larger center panel that it not as complicated as several cables?

Here are a few bad pictures of my original afghan:

That is beautiful. Unfortunately I do not have any ideas for you. I probably could not crochet that pattern as of yet and I have never learned to knit. Hope you get someone to come along that has a good answer for you!

Hi Lynne, I checked out google for some info for you - I know nothing about knitting. Since I don't know how to knit, I'm not sure this would be what you're looking for, but I found it when I searched for knit popcorn stitch
I hope it helps.

Popcorn Stitch: (4x + 2 stitches)

R1: (wrong side) k1, *(k1, p1, k1) all in next stitch, p3 tog, repeat from * to last
st, ending k1. R2: P all stitches
R3: k1, *p 3 tog, (k1, p1, k1) all in next stitch, repeat from * to last st, ending with k1
R4: P all stitches

This is the page I got that from.

I was thinking something like that would probably work but I didn't think about changing it from knitting to perling. I think you found a great answer to the question Mary. Good going girl. Hope you are feeling well.

Thanks newlife and TK... but I did not make the afghan I pictured above - that is the one my mom crocheted for me when I was going off to college.

But I'm glad to pass along your compliments to her! Thanks again...

Mary - that looks good - I'll have to take a better look at it when I have a little more patience to put into it - thanks for posting the instructions and the link!
