What do you all wear in the garden? I decided this year I would not bolt out of the house in my good tennis shoes, only to get caught in spring mud and ruin my shoes. I'm looking for a good , comfy , washable/hoseable shoe. Any ideas? Thanks, auntnene

I wear Doc Martin work boots. If I'm doing something where the mud is deep or if I have to wade into the pond, I wear Army issue combat boots. They go half-way up to my knees, and are waterproof all the way to the top! The tongue is sewn into the boot on both sides all the way up, so no water can get in. They are pretty comfy, too! And, they look good with my paisley skirt!

If you have a smaller backyard garden and boots would be too much (i would die in boots Cindy!) I keep an inexpensive pair of Tennis shoes on the patio and garden clogs that easier than tennis shoes. They are a rubber/plastic kind of stuff and you can generally find them at Wal-Mart, Target or Lowe's garden center. I guess I am not very safety minded because I mow in old sandles so I wont have tan lines around my ankles..the only problem with that is we have a trillion ant beds everywhere..man-o-man do those babies sting!

so I wont have tan lines around my ankles.. You should see my ankles! (or NOT!) I have worn boots for many years. Combat boots or Doc Martin's. The only other shoe I wear is Converse high-tops. Literally, this is ALL I wear! My idea of "dressing up" is a real full hippie skirt made out of that crinkley material. Those skirts go with my boots or my Converse, either one! All summer it's shorts and a t-shirt or tank top, with the boots, of course. You never know when you're gonna have to kick something real hard or grab a shovel out of the back of the truck on the side of the road somewhere and dig something up...so, boots are required all the time. I get a pretty dang good tan in the summer, because I'm outside 24/7. This summer I promise I'll post a picture of my ankles! You will laugh so hard! Cindy

I am a walking advertisement for this company... (**My entire family is too!!!**) Muck Boots and Shoes They are a tiny bit pricey, but waaaaaaaaay worth it, IMHO I have Womens Daily Green Muck Shoe, for like wet, yuckie days, in the late spring, summer, early fall. Once it starts getting cold I live in the Womens Black Chore-Mid Muck Boots... (**I have one foot that is bigger than the other, by like a half shoe size, and often to fit the one foot, the other either sloshes around in the shoe/boot or is so tight I'm in pain and a cold and numb foot but this is the first pair of boots that fit both feet at the same time... ) And they are made out of the same material, as I understand it as a deep sea diver's suit would have. They are very warm in the winter, but dont' wear them in the house, and then go out side My husband has the big mens boots, and both kids have the kids boots... My mother liked my first pair I had gotten and had asked if she could have them, so I got another pair... My f~i~l has a pair, and the list could go on and on of the people we've told about them... I should have a commission... I know they came out with these, Muck\'s Super Sandal and Muck\'s Super Clog I have the clogs, but just a basic pair. There's another one they came out with that has plugs in them... it's hard to discribe... But they look like regular clogs, and then you take the plugs out of them and it's like you get air holes in your clogs...I wanted a pair of those, but couldnt' find them... My husband's work sells the boots etc. so we get a little bit of a discount..but they didn't get those one's in... They're very durable, wash up easy, and that's a must around here... and feel nice on your feet.. Weezie P/S Just found another Muck LADYBUG GARDEN CLOG Kinda cute!!! Yet another one Muck\'s New Cikana™ Boots & Shoes Found the info on what they're made up... What\'s so great about a Muck Boot™? As you can tell, I am very much in love with all of the boots...

If it's an realllllllly hot~sweaty summer, I am in my flip~flops' *I'm not supposed to wear them, no real support* but I then get the lines around where the flip~flops' are... Weezie

My mother (b. 1919) was a farm girl who ran barefoot all her life and we children did as well. As soon as the lilacs bloomed, the ground was declared warm enough for bare feet and oh, none of us could stand the wait each year for those blooms to show! Yet with my son, I insist he wear shoes in the gardens, mainly because I know the landowner plows in manure each spring... My prosthesis can't be worn without a shoe, so now I always have to shoe up if I intend to walk, even on the beach. Merme

Oh WEEEEZIEEEEEE... I want to get some muck shoes now. How do you know what size to get? My sneakers are the cheapo walmart kind.. and I range size 8-9, depending on the sneaker. Do I get an 8, or a 9? <img border="0" alt="[perplexed]" title="" src="graemlins/confused.gif" /> Meg

Welllllllllll, I am really wacky in shoes, so, for me, with the chore boots (winter), I went with one size bigger
But I have a question for you too?????
Do you have a local feed store or the likes that might carry the Muck's??? Like they are available on line, but my husband's work place carries them too... and of course we went with the husbands' work place because we could take them back if they didn't fit right, and I could try them on... I'm not sure about garden centers, they may very well where you are, but it's a rule of thumb that they are in farm places for sale.
I don't remember the size my husband brought home the first time, but he did and I tried them on, and did send them back.... well, I think the reason was he brought home the Hight boot, and not the calf boot *chore*, I liked the calf length boot better, easier to get on... ****I did have my father~in~law make a boot puller~offer.... there is a wonderful suction on them, and I do have to wear socks with them..
Which one's you lookin' at?????

Hi Meg ~
When I was browsing around those nice web sites Weezie posted, I noticed it said to go with the larger size if you are a between. It also said although some people like to wear thick socks, these shoes are designed for a medium weight athletic sock....
Something else you might consider is taking the time to go to a quality shoe store and having your feet professionally measured. You do not have to purchase anything for this free service, which should include a measurement of both feet for width and length.
But Weezie is right: sometimes the only thing for it is to try on an actual pair because style differences can make a fit differnce.
Let us know how you make out!

Oh Merme, out here in hickville WV, we have no stores to shop with shoe sizing available. Well, I do.. maybe 35 minutes away at the closest mall. I'll consider that an option. It seems, the older I got, and after 2 kids, my feet have grown 2-3 sizes!! Weezie.. I was looking into the basic muck shoe.. just a simple slip on, the size of a sneaker. I'm not into sandals or clogs.. I want something that stays on my foot. Also, I don't think I'd wear boots in the summer.. I get too hot. Now, maybe come winter.. for the mucky mess then.. lol. My needs are pretty simple. I like your idea of checking the area.. we have a lot of farmers around, and there's feed stores, and farming stores, & such around. I'll take a peek. Meg

Meg, Thats' where we originally discovered them 'was the feed store.. *husband delivers feed* I'll consider that an option. It seems, the older I got, and after 2 kids, my feet have grown 2-3 sizes!! I was going to go into all that but time was limited this morning, *had to walk to school~the Ujoints are very, very, close to not being there anymore on my vehicle.. ) But I would not do with out them........ They are my boot of choice from now on, I doubt I will ever change from them... Weezie

Oh Meg, you are not alone with the increased foot size through pregnancy.
When I was pregnant with Maxi, my feet also grew an entire size. My OB/GYN chuckled at my dismay and told me that SOME women's feet do grow again while pregnant.
She also told me that for SOME women, the rib cage never goes back into it's pre-pregnancy position and will stay a bit wider for the rest of their lives, making them thicker around the midriff and chest than they were before.
How NICE! I thought, looking at my newly big feet and widened ribs! Of the four girl siblings in my family, I, the youngest, am the only one who experienced these peculiar body changes AND I'm the only one who kept to the doctor recommended weight gain. Go figure.

Don't laugh when I say this, but I've also heard that some women's brains shrink while pregnant, but goes back to the original size afterwards..
I'm still waiting form mine to grow back  :p

I am doing a happy dance!! I just got home from our local feed store and now have on a pair of Muck super clogs. They were $15 bucks! Can you believe it? I think that is very reasonable and oh sooooo comfy! I bought a pair of basics on-line before I found these. I think I'll save them for ickier weather. The owner and his wife both wear these clogs to work in. I feel like I hit the jackpot!!
Thanks again, auntnene

I got a nice pair of winter boots from Zeller's before the winter set in - I love 'em.
I just wash the mud off them when I come in. It's going to be hard parting with them in the summer, but I'll look kinda' silly out their with my winter galoshes, among the clover risings.
What the heck! I'll wear 'em anyway.

Auntnene, How did you know I was looking for a good walking shoe? I'm pshyic!! I over pronate when I walk and finding a stable/motion control shoe is hard. For me... good shoe= walking. Bad shoe = no walking = I get fat I have the exact same thing, in my right foot... and I walk alot.... I got thru a pair of shoes within 3~6 months.... I am very hard on my shoes, I am up and down, and alllllll over, I walk a ba~zillion miles in a day... and I am hard on shoes... When I saw these, the slip on variety, I liked them, and thought, if they were made for women by women, then maybe I would give them a try.. *and to spend the $bucks$ that I did, I must have thought they looked d*n good*. They are sooooooooooo comfortable to me, it's unbelieveable... they're a little boxey in the heal, but give me a good heal to step down on... and they're so nice just to slip on and slip off. Wonderfulll I have 2 of the canvas, for gardening, and 3 for regular walking and going to places... Weezie
