Hi all ~ wavey

Early this morning I was sitting in my messy kitchen thinking I couldn't cope another second with the way things are in my apartment. The place is not well-organized to accomodate my wheelchair and untidy living is chronic as everything must be kept within reach of a 9 year old and a person who is seated. It makes me nuts!

Plus, we have been under much financial stress of late.

The phone rang. It was a friend from church AND a DJ from a local radio station! The station had asked listeners to write in about a family in particular need this season of a "Christmas Wish" and my pal Lisa had written about Maxi and I. Her letter won the contest!

I knew nothing about any of this until the woman on the phone started eplaining. Several area businesses are contributing sensible stuff. The apartment will be cleaned. A decorator will come and see what we need to better organize. A furniture place will donate reconditioned furniture. The apartment will be painted. There will be gift certificates for clothes and food. A gift certificate for toys for Maxi. A Christmas tree....

So I sat here bawling into the phone, speechless, unable to think of a single thing to say beyond "Thank You!"

In recent weeks I have simply been overwhelmsed with the task of trying to make our lives work in this place that is so messy and unhandy. Mel can verify how much in need of help this place is in as she was here just last week and did much to lend a hand herself.

So I can't hardly believe any of it. Maxi left for school fairly dancing down the sidewalk. I called my priest who also hadn't been told a word and he could barely believe it, either.

Oh, to have a clean, fresh home for the holidays! To have some surprises for Maxi! thumbup

Merme!! I'm sooo happy for you! A radio station in Philly does something similiar, except instead of cleaning and stuff like that, they give a $1000 gift credit card...the kind you buy as a gift and the people can use them anywhere. I like what you got even better!! kissies

I think that is the coolest thing I've heard of in a long time. The Good Lord knows that no one needed that more than you and Max. You guys have been thru more than your share in the last year. It's time to have something good happen to you! smile You take that blessing and run with it. Don't even look back! angell

Oh, Merme! That's so fantastic! Particularly the part about the organizer, that's going to help you so much!
I don't suppose your place has univeral design, does it? (Do I have the right term there? Homes designed specifically to accomodate people with all kinds of different needs, such as making hallways and doorways 36-42 inches minimum, to accomodate wheelchairs or walkers, which can be bulky, or countertops of varying levels, or cabinet pulls that accomodate people with, say, arthritis?) I bet these people can help find ways to make a lot of everyday tasks much more manageable for you.

Boy, something like that really restores your faith in humanity, doesn't it? Thanks so much for sharing it with us! I'm so happy for you and Maxi. smile

I have to say that this is the most amazing and beautiful thing I've heard in years. Here in LA, people don't care about each other as much as they should. I'm lucky to have good neighbors but that is not a permanent situation.

All the happiness in the world to you and Maxi!

How wonderful for you--and in turn for us!!! Thank you for sharing with us. The Christmas season heightens feelings of happiness, sharing, love and warmth while it can for some increase the feelings aroused by unfulfilled expectations. I'm so glad your sadness and frustration has been lifted by the wonderful gesture of love from your community and your friends. Sometimes just knowing someone cares is all it takes.

Merry Christmas

On Tuesday, the 21st, the morning DJ from the radio station is coming to meet me and I think to set up the appointments for the others. And certainly, I will let you all know how things unfold.

They already phoned to tell me that the phone call they made to me the other day will be aired tomorrow morning early enough for Maxi to hear it before school. Now I gotta dig out a radio and try to find the station!

But tonight is Maxi's Christmas chorus concert and he is quite excited. The violin concert won't be held until springtime, though. He is a funny kid; so comfortable on-stage and in front of cameras. He just relaxes into it in a way that many people, even adults, can not.
