Greetings from Maine! I purchased 4 railing planters and would like some ideas on what to plant in them. My hubster would like at least some fragrant flowers in the planters so he can sit on the porch and smell them. Could any of you experienced gardeners give me some idea's? Thanks a "bunch" :-) Etoile

Boy, that's a toughy for me. I would put petunias or flowering moss in them,,,but neither are fragrant. The fragrant flowers that I can think of (@ 4:30am)would be peonies or hyacinth...peonies would be much too big and I think Duh

Don't know how tall you'd like the plants, but snapdragons have a delicious candy smell to them, and heliotrope smells like baby powder to me - is also a great butterfly magnet!

I'M JUST A BEGINNER SO YOU MAY WANT TO PASS THIS BYE.

Arabian Jasmine is reputed to have a marvelous smell and it grows well in containers but it would help if we knew the growing conditions the planters would be in. From what I understand if your plants are going to be close to the house you can add one growing zone to your number. Is the railing in full sun, partial shade, or full shade. Lavender also has a wonderful smell but for me it has been impossible to grow so far.

There are some jasmine vines that just perfume the air, although I don't remember what type it was. I got a whiff of one at a garden center, and spent several minutes looking for the source. It was a jasmine, and I could smell it about 20 feet away. It was fantastic!
