I received a gardenia plant from my neighbor when we all moved in (new subdivision) and I left it in it's original container because landscaping is none-existent in our orange clay-mud yard and I have not yet determined where to permanently plant it. It was doing great until our last round of ice storm(s) that I was unable to get my plants covered for. All of the leaves turned black, but remained on the plant. My roses have put out a plethora of new leaves since then, but the gardenia is looking very dead.

Is it dead?? If not, what should I do to resucitate the poor thing. I can't find anything in any of my general gardening books for this particular problem and the internet has not been helpful to date.
