These guys, 5 in all, have been hanging out in my yard for three days now. They come and go . I think they've been ripping into the trash, so I've moved it all into the garage after picking up all that sh@# twenty times. dev
They also go down to the road and cars are beeping and swerving all the time. If they happened to get hit does anyone know how to prep them because it'll be an early Thanksgiving for us! idea [Linked Image]

Melcon,
If you or someone should happen to "get one"
If it's anything like a deer road kill you have to attend to it immediately....
I know if a deer get's hit, it can get two things that spoil the meat...
First if it hits the urine sac, well, I think you can get the picture.. :p
And the second, if it's bleeding internally it can damage the meat if it's let to bleed too long,
So, you better be right around there if it happens!

My husband was driving his 16 wheeler and a couple of them tried to run and fly a tad bit into the air and he said he caught the last one in the flock on the top of his hood/windshield, and it then kinda slid off and it did run back off the road, said "That bird was one tough son~of~bird!"
Wouldn't have wanted to eat that one for Thanksgivin'!!! laugh frown

Can those things fly?????

I know they have wings and stuff, but I remember an old "WKRP In Cincinnati" episode where they did a Thanksgiving promotion and took a bunch of live turkeys up in a plane and dropped them out, and it was UGLY laugh because they just splatted on the ground in a big parking lot.

We have a BUNCH of them right down the hill at the neighbor's. They stay in his horse pasture all the time. They are HUGE! Freaked me out first time I saw them because I didn't know what they were! shk nutz I went home and told Andy there was a herd of big birds down in the pasture that look like the bird on the "Wild Turkey" bottle. DUH! ! ! laugh One of them has this wild looking thing hanging down from his neck that is about a foot long! FREAKY!

I've only seen them get a foot or so off the ground when my little 9# dog chases them. Yeah, they are huge and ugly.

They do not fly like you'd think of an eagle or a blue jay or cardinal.....
But they can run, get a little air and then land..
but it ain't very high at all!!!
I thought maybe cause they're too heavy??????????
Not too sure on that one!! Duh

it has something to do with the wing/body ratio. but they can actually get up to about 8-10 feet if they have too

Hey, yesterday the busdriver told me that the police officer (we only have one in our small town) had one of the turkeys by the neck down the road from me . He said it was limping around? Yeah right lala Johnny Law was looking for an early dinner. The busdriver asked me had I noticed one not well and come to think of it I had only seen 4 out of 5 yesterday. So I don't know if one was limping I think I saw them after Johnny got a hold of one. It's raining today (thank god it's so dry here) so I don't know if I'll see them .

I think getting one with a pellet gun would be better than road killed turkey, Theres got to be a good way to prepare them, or maybe if theirs an abbotoir neir you you could get them to prepare it. SO all you have to do is cool it

yummmmmmmmmmm turkey!!! i'd love to have some of that right now with some good gravy and smashed taters with more gravy....oh i could just go on!!! ok i'm gonna shutup now lol! i don't think i could live without meat! i'd die VERY quickly if i were a vegitarian! ok my dad hit a deer with his truck when he was coming around a turn and so he bought it home and we literally had road kill for dinner that night! i had to get up that morning at the crack of dawn just about so i could "help" my dad skin this deer! i didn't help much lol! i kept my eyes on the trees and everything (except the deer) and then my parents were laughing and saying what's wrong?? i said nothing just enjoying the scenery! lol i usually like to eat deer but not if i saw it dead and being "prepared"! i think i only ate like 2 or 3 bites lol

Are you saying because lt is ugly lt is okay to kill it
I'm not saying I'm gonna kill, I'm saying that if it got hit by a car someone might want to fix it and eat it, no need to waste free food ! I do eat meat but I also enjoy a good vegetarian meal too! Charlie the busdriver confirmed it today, one is definitely gone from the flock.

Yes, they are pretty ugly but in a beautiful and fantastic way. wink

Ok shocked l owe you an apology shocked did not realise it had been hit by a car, you are right not to waste the food. Sorry but l am so sensitive when it comes to killing animals.
l am not a vegetarian by the way, yes l do feel guilty about that <img border="0" alt="[perplexed]" title="" src="graemlins/confused.gif" />
Where l live there is so much cruelty to animals, kids shooting pellets at Swans and their offspring, birds being caught in nets and then the kids pull the heads off them all just for fun. Horses which graze in nearby fields have had broken bottles pushed into their private parts, that happened recently to a friend of mine with the horse she had for six years, she found it laying in the stable in agony.
So yes l am sensitive when l hear about people killing animals, obviously wrong in your case my apologies one more to you shocked
