There is NO smell outside...just in the basement, where a garage is. The skunk can't get into the second level of the basement, thank God!

I walked all the way around the house....

...too scared to go into the basement.

I mean...
...what GOOD could actually come of me going in the basement at this point?

This happened at my parents farm once. My dad didn't realize it and found himself in a stare down with it! Oopsie. After about 20 attemts to get up the stairs (it was so sick with rabies) it made it outside and my dad disposed of it before it could get to my pets. I had dogs & cats up the wazoo in the livingroom to save them from the skunk! Hope you have a happy ending to your stinky story!

Ya know, when I was still in school, a couple who lived near the school had a pet skunk. They had her "descented"....we always just said it was "deskunked". But she was just like a cat.....but with longer nails!! laugh

I had a friend once (hmmm...imagine that!) whose boyfriend moved in with her and brought his pet skunk that was "deskunked". It still stank/stunk pretty bad. When you walked in her house, it smelled just like this one does now! laugh lala

And that sucker was MEAN! It would just walk up and bite the crap out of you for no apparent reason. She had to get her feet stitched up on more than one occasion because it would bite her feet whenever she sat at the table barefooted.

She finally told her boyfriend it was either her or the skunk....make a choice.

He moved out and took the skunk! laugh

It's smelling better in here now...

...or maybe my nose is just accustomed to the stink now!

P.S. Who's gonna be the first to say "I told you so?" laugh shocked

Hopefully your house will smell better soon.We had an animal scratching at a bicket that is next to the house lastnight. I made Stephen go out to see what it was, but it ran away before he could see what it was. He says it was bigger than a cat...and I'll believe that! It was making some pretty serious scratching sounds!!!! sca

You know, it's almost funny being afraid of something as small as a skunk. Assuming it doesn't have rabies. But at the same time, I think I would freak out if I came face-to-face with one. laugh laugh

I came face-to-face with a HUGE porcupine once. That was scary. Even though I know they don't really "shoot" quills, geez that thing was huge! Bigger than most dogs! It was dark and I thought it was a baby bear at first. sca

Several years ago when I lived at my farm, one of my Norwegian Elkhound's (an old female) would catch a possum every now and then and keep it with her for DAYS! She'd carry it around in her mouth, then when she'd lay it down it would just fall over "dead"!

She'd sleep with it right next to her, usually with her arm across it so it couldn't get away. Every now and then they would try to get away from her when she was asleep.....but she'd usually wake up in time to catch them and bring them back.

We'd end up having to take them away from her after a few days. She never tried to hurt them, just wanted a "baby". It was kind of sad... ters

I had at least 12 shots of Goldslaggar <sp?> and then a few drinks after that...can't really remember all that I had to drink. They drove me home at 3:00, I took 4 advil, drank 2 glasses of water and passed out only to wake up at 6:00 to get my nails done. I got outside and couldn't find my car!!!! I thought someone stole it...then I remembered that someone drove me home. I had to call and wake up a friend to get me and take me to my car. Hahaha.....I was feeling fine and he looks horrible!!! UPDATE!!!

Do you remember that stratching sound that I made Stephen go check out?? Well lastnight I was in the kitchen and I heard leaves rustling on the back porch (its covered with leaves right now). I turned off the kitchen light and looked through the window but didn't see anything...but kept hearing the leaves. So I get right up against the window of the door and look straight down. Low and behold!!! There was a white head digging through my trash bag that I had thrown out there the night before. I couldn't quite make out what it was until it shifted a bit. It was an opossum!! I've never seen one so close before! So now I know what has been eating Puss-wah's food!! It was a younger one, because we opened the back door up really slowly so that we could shoot it with the BB gun and it just looked at us....didn't even run! It started to run when I opened the screen door....I shot...not really sure if I hit it or not...maybe in the rear. It jumped off of the deck, didn't move, then I could hear it running through the leaves. So....that was the mysterious scratching sound!

Oh, you guys! laugh

Up here we can have trouble with bears and occasionally moose that come out of the woods.

A few years back, a fellow heard a thunking kind of noise on his darkened back porch. Glancing through the screen door, he thought it was a giant dog of some sort and picked up the rolled newspapser on the kitchen table, opened the door, and whacked it on the nose. It was a bear.

That door got slammed shut pretty quick. laugh

The wildlife people came and posted catch-the-bear-safely traps throughout the neighborhood to haul it back into the deepest woods. Don't wanna be leaving uncovered trash around to attract hungry critters unless you want to be feeding them up close and personal all winter! thumbup

We usually just tie the bags up and put them on the back porch until the morning that the trash gets picked up. We have a barrel, but when the trash guys empty it, they just throw it back onto the curb. Lately its been windy here so I get home in the afternoon and my barrel is rolling back and forth in the middle of the street. But now I guess we have no choice but to use the barrel again.

My wild pets here don't bother the trash because they have their own bowls of goodies around the yard!
The skunks LOVE Cat Chow and raw chicken.

Oh Mel, do you remember about 7 years ago when the ostrich got loose in Maine and EVERYBODY was looking for it for the longest time?!

Those things are usually between 6 and 7 feet tall and I could just picture some wilderness man coming home exclaiming "Hey Ma! Looky here at the wierd turkey I shot!" laugh laugh

Fortunately, the thing was found safe and sound and didn't end up in anyone's stew pot.

One thing I know about possum's, they are creatures of habit. My mother lives in the city and has a bad habit of puting the garbage on the back porch, usully cuz its to late to walk it to the alley or whatever. when I was living with her my bedroom would face the alley and backyard. Every night like clockwork this possum would walk the same path to get to the garbage. never did I see him (or her) travel any other way. Even if you stop putting your garbage where its accessible to them it will take several days for them to get that its not there anymore!!
Strange creatures. I bet alot of wild animals are like that.

Yeah...it was here again lastnight...and of course, without thinking. I threw a bag full of old salad out there lastnight. DUH!! I looked for it about the same time I had seen it before, but it wasn't there.....but this morning when I went to the kitchen to get tuna for the cats (their dry food is all gone this morning) I looked out and sure enough there was chopped up lettuce scattered on the deck. I suppose I need to look out a couple of times each night.

After I calmed down, I finished reading it!
Whew! Thank God your mom's not a possum!

Thanks!

I just wasn't thinking about what I was doing. I cleaned out the refrigerator lastnight and didn't feel like walking to the barrel. Its not like we live in a dangerous area, I just didn't feel like putting shoes on and going outside into the cold! smile

laugh laugh That's funny!!! Where I live, we have city trash pickup twice a week. When we lived in the city (I'm in the suburbs now) we had a guy come to pick it up...he had his own business with real trash trucks. But there are beat up pick-up trucks that collect trash too. The city is trying to get city trash pick-up...which alot of people are tighting tooth and nail because it will close alot of little businesses down.
