we d like to make a pond next summer but i d like to know if we can dig the hole in the fall and let it satnd all winter.

I would not want too do that.... with all the snow and such it would cave down the sides and cause more work for you in the spring... Are you thinking of doing it that way because of the frost depth??
If that the case you could try it and cover it with ply wood or something...

you are right,i didn t think of that,just though it would melt and make water already in the pound(i would dig and put the tarp this fall).but you roigt,maybe i ll dig it up next spring instead,

Spring is probably best, but hopefully we'll be totally redoing mine this fall!

That's if there will be a built-up area of soil for a small fall.

He said that the soil will have a chance to settle with winter rain, allowing for less settling after the fall or short creekbed is installed.

If it's just a pond, or a tiny raised water course to the side, then you should be fine digging next year.
