hi everyone,

today i ve put some bells of ireland seed in some mix of planting soil and a little bit of pete moss;it s in one of those green plastuc pot (the ones from the nursery.).i ve placed it in front of a patio door facing south.i took a chance on sowing them now,evendogh the packet said to sow aroud mid april...is it gonna be ok anyway or did i sow it too early.

I believe those require light to germinate but I'm not sure at the moment. Let me check.

Yep lite to germinate and a prechill works best. Keep them at about 55 to 60 degrees until the sprout. Hope that helps you. And yes you are somewhat early for those. You should plant 8 to 10 weeks before your last frost in your area.

Did you plant them all or just some of them?

ya i m early,do you think it ll be all right anyway? they always get direct daylight being in front of the patio doos with curtains open but should i put a light on top anyway,you think?should i put them on an tummy pad for warmth?

You have to unbury them. They need to be on top of the soil. And they need to stay cold not warm. Being in the house is going to be to warm to germinate them. They will have to go outside maybe on an unheated porch?

oh,thanks,didn t know...so i m gonna uncover them right now and put them on balcony that faces south...but it s geting very cold here,can they go to -5 fareinheith? or should i bring them in in a mounth or so?

They would like between 55 and 60F. Maybe your garage? If you have a window in there or can set up a grow light there. Or possible if you can make it so your light doesn't go off in your refrigerator and keep them in there until they sprout.

Those silly things are hard to sprout I wish you the best of luck with them. I gave up on them. They were just to much trouble for me.

Francine, I keep missing you online. I think I'm going to try and grow some of those this year.

I like them,but they don't like TX heat.You growing them in pot outdoors would be the same as wintersowing them.I sowed some in the fall the 1st time I tried them.They we're in a pot under the eaves & did quiet well for the winter(being mild here...sorry)I would move them in for frosty nites& move back out mid-day.The next time I grew them (took a year or two for success again)they did poorly& were very short as in barely 2 inches tall but did bloom.
Try looking here.It is full of info on wintersowing& may help you figure the best way to go.(ME???I'd move pot to a milk jug& cut lid partway off so will still cover& let MN look after them.Wintersowing impressed me last me last year.)
