Actually, there's some wonderful information on this site thumbup if you just type in shade plants. One section even has three lists: partial shade, full shade and one for shrubs and trees. It also tells about soil preparation, compost and adjusting the pH. thumbup Plus you can click on some of the highlighted plants and get even more information about the specific plant. smile

I do it so often I thought it would be easier for some people instead of re-typing the same thing all the time..

If we are going to add full sun plants that do well in shade I have to brag about the miniature snap dragons. I have them underneath a maple tree and they love it there. They are in full bloom right now and I just love there show of color. I'm going to have to get more reds for next year I didn't end up with many this year but I sure do like them. They are great.

I hope this thread isn't just for perennials. I use Blue Holly (Ilex x meserveae), Green or Variegated Japanese Maple (the reds aren't as nice in the shade), Hydrangea p. 'Tardiva', American Holly (these get big) and Swiss Stone Pine (P. cembra) as the 'backbone' in shade gardens.

Hi sheila..If you are going to want to plant around it... I would bypass the putting anything down!! ...I do believe ther hens and chicks need a bit more sun...But you can try them! I have had luck with many sun loving plants in the shade! Mums would be pretty as well..
What I would do is maybe put some larger rocks around the perimeter and then fill it in with the smaller rocks!
