I don't know if this has been covered but thought I would mention it. I have read about using blind slats as plant labels. Well it so happend that I had a mini blind that I was throughing out, And thought why not give it a try, so I cut the blind slats into the size labels I could use in my seed flats and also in individual pots. They are going to work wonderfully. Another method I have tried is saving those plastic forks, spoons and esp the knives. The handle part when broken off works great.

Those are great ideas. I've seen plant labels in catalogues for some real high prices. Id love to get the copper kind you etch on, permanent labels. Do you have any ideas on a really permanent marker to write with? Mine always fade and run.

I had gotten some from a place called Paw~Paw...
and they came with something like a grease pencil something...
I abuse mine, and can still read it, if only I could read my own hand crit writing, we'd be all set... wink

Here's the link Paw Paw Everlast Label Company

I got the value pack to see how they were,
and got like one of each, and it came with the pencil...

As long as you don't touch it, it doesn't come off.

I use a sharpie....It doesn't seem to come off even when you want it too. I just conducted an expermint with the sharpie ink on it and it will not even rub off (I used me fingers rubbing over the ink while warm water was running over it). So that is what I will be using on these blind slat pieces I have cut.

comfrey, I reuse the little labels that come from nursery plants, but the sharpie ink runs and fades once they're placed in the garden. Then I forget what tomato varieties are what!
Some day I'll look for sheets of copper...maybe at Hobby Lobby...and cut my own permanent markers. thumbup

I sent you a PM Franny...I haven't started the empty packet project yet, don't have enough empty packages yet, I've got to clean the room out a lot in order to even get to the wall, It is the storage room besides my office space. Half of the room is filled with boxes, and it is a large room, two double beds will fit in here with room for two long dressers, they are gone now, replaced by all the boxes.

Pepper, you can make permanent tags by cutting up a aluminium pie tray and etching it with a sharp pencil. I still find them intact on trees i planted over 10 years ago and they are still legible.

Wow, Longy, thank you! i had never thought of trying that! By midseason every year, all my markers are faded out, and I forget what half of my stuff is! nutz Plus, I forgot to write down what some of my fruit tree varieties were. I've been needing something really permanent.

Hi Dave,

Did you try a cd-marker yet to write with on the labels?
Posted By: peppereater Re: Homemade plant/pot labels - February 26th, 2006 at 08:58 AM
maja...I'm not sure what a cd-marker is...is it for making permanent labels on cd's? Tell me about these, if you would! I think a lot of people use Sharpies, a type of "magic marker," which is good for starting trays and such.

It's a marker to write directly on to the cd, but i also use them to write on my plant-labels. On the label it says: 'waterbased ink for permanent marks on upper side of cd's'.
