Hello,
what a GREAT site!!!

I was happily successful in rooting my avocado seed. I waited until the first sign of stem growing while it was still in water. Then planted it in large pot. Soon that stem seemed to die off while two shoots began. Now one shoot is about 11" with 5 leaves on top and a few forming down stem and the other about 5" with no leaves.
I read that I should pinch the top leaves off to encourage growth. But what do I do about the small 5" stem. Should I cut that off down to the seed or leave it grow?
I live in southern BC Canada very near the Washington border

Hi Lookie, it is a great site innit!
Keep the strongest stem and cut the other one off.

lookie
cut the weaker stem off as close as possible to the seed.now cut the top off of the other stem just above one of the leaves.i would cut off at least 3 inches.
keep it in partial shade for now.as it gets stronger you can put it in full sun a few hours at a time until it gets used to the change.do not leave it out during freezing weather.
